Brent nailed it, IMO. Without a doubt hand polishing followed by a slow patient rust bluing will yield superior results without dealing with the noxious process of hot salts 'bluing'. Anyone can fire up a buffing wheel and polish a piece of steel and then throw it in a bluing tank. The results will range from horrid to pretty good, but never, IMO, will the best of those jobs equal a decently hand polished and rust blued job.

Like so much else in life, what you get out of a job of work is equal to what you put into it. Sometimes there are no shortcuts, and this is one of them.

Make sure when you start the process to keep any oil off the steel even the oil on your body(hands). Some guy,s say it is not nessessary but I always wear rubber gloves whenever I handle the steel & never had a problem. You also MUST use OIL FREE STEEL WOOL.
