Does anybody have an opinion on which one of these mounts for the old Savage 340 is better? They look similar. Thanks

A buddy of mine has a pile of pre-64 Model 70s and one 340. He swaers by the sheet metal mount sold by Gun Parts Corp/Numerich Arms.

I've had the B-Square mount on a couple of Savage 340 series rifle and liked it, much better quality than the stamped sheet-metal factory mount and much better looking than the Weaver side-mount. Awhile back, I bought a Savage 340 in 30-30 to give as a gift and installed a 2-7x33 Leupold VX-I in a B-Square mount. It came out looking good and shoot good groups with Hornady 160 grain LEVERevolution ammo.

I love this gun but am not really digging the mount. Which one is this? I bought a 340 .222 for a buddy and he had fits trying to get a mount/scope combo that he liked. Once he did it's a shooter, cloverleafs with 55 gr. Hornady's. This is about as clean as I've seen.

That is the common Weaver side-mount. Note how close the ring spacing is on the Weaver and compare that to the B-Squre.

The split bridge, single locking lug, and genreally crappy triggers have been the reasons that every Savage 340 series rifle that has come my way has subsequently gone down the road to a new home.

Here's an interesting set up, though I'm sure the Redfield rings are only there for looks - yuck, yuck, yuck

Yeah, my old man was a 340 guy. He added a .222 to his 'collection' and installed a Weaver side mount and a K4. The thing was fairly accurate, but not anything you would write home to Mom about. He got it so as to join me on woodchuck safaris. (He lusted after my HiWall .219 Donaldson Wasp, but was too cheap spring for one for himself. We ended up making a deal that he would pop the close ones and I would drill the far off ones.) I couldn't abide the 340's horrid trigger that was only marginally less so after having a trigger job done to it, so it was one of the first to go after it became mine.

I hung on to the 340 .30/30 for a good while for sentimental reasons, but it too went away (to one of Dad's grandsons). Those things are decent entry level rifles but are indeed lacking in a few areas

Thanks for the feedback. I got the 340 from my Grandson's other Grandfather and am trying to fix it up a little for my Grandson. I can see and feel its limitations but still want to put a scope on it to give it to my Grandson one day. Just not sure of the pros and cons of the BSquare or the Sun Optics mount. Seems the stamped mounts and the Weaver mounts have some following but most seem to prefer the B Square. Have not seen much on the Sum Mount so that is what spawned my question.

The Weaver side mount on the Savage 340 tends to leave the scope slightly offset from the bore. To me that's not a good thing.

Installed via an old Weaver "N" mount.
