My Dad gifted me with a J.P.Sauer&Sohn 12gaugex9.3x72R combiniation rifle. Kruppstahl barrels. He is a tool and die maker, so I have dies. I have a source for bullets. I can NOT find any loading data as to powders,charge weights. Does anyone have some info that could help??? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" />

A perusal of my Handloading library didn't turn up much. I have more handloading data than anyone I know except Ken Waters. As you are likely aware, data for the 9.3x72R is pretty skinny.

The one thing I did find is that there are two different cartridges so named. The [color:"blue"]9.3x72R [/color] and the [color:"red"]9.3x72R Sauer [/color]. It is important to know which one you have, because [color:"red"]They are NOT interchangable! [/color] The Sauer cartridge has been obsolete for a LONG time. The regular 9.3x72R was originally a black powder cartridge.

A check in a Norma booklet dated 1965 yeilded exactly nothing. Also, nothing from COTW. I checked Lyman Handloading manuals going back to issue #39, about 1950... Also nothing. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

The Handloadier's Manual of Cartridge Conversions lists one load for the 9.3x72R (NOT the SAUER) of 39.0 gr.s of BL-C2 with a 193 grs bullet. (Not specified whether lead or jacketed)

Best to slug your bore before you load, as it may be as small as .364" or as large as .368"

John J. Stransky wrote a small article on the 9.3x72R in Handloader #149. I have that article and can Xerox it and snail mail it to you or you can contact Wolfe Publishing for a back issue.

Thanks for taking the trouble. Mine is the 9.3x72R. Made shortly before WWll about 1935. RWS or Norma ammo for it is expensive! My Father reloaded for it for years but has yet to give me his specs. He always used the Barnes bullets while the German ammo is H-mantle. I have 35 rounds on hand, so I can have a little fun. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> I'll send you my street address.

S&B or one of the like Euro makers is I believe making ammo for the 9.3x72R. Don;t remembe the exact specs though. Sorry I'm no help on the reloading data either.

I was looking at an awesome little single shot in 9.3x72R not to long ago in the local shop, but as you have noted, could find neither data, brass, or dies for the critter so couldn't see spending the 1500 they were asking! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Dies,brass and bullets available from Huntington. Loading data as has been noted is PAINFULLY scarce. I think that Fed Barnes' "Cartridges of the World has a load or two though. That book is priceless for us fellas who LIKE unusual guns. Give it a go BMAN. My rifle is a hoot to shoot and is a real nice hunting rifle for the areas I tend to haunt-er-hunt in.

I was at Cabelas just south of Salt Lake City two weeks ago and they had a couple of boxes of S&B 9.3X73R loaded ammo for sale. Now if I could just find a source of 9.3X82R I would be happy.

9,3x72 R sports special .364" 12,5 g bullets, .366" (for 9,3x62, 64, 74 R are too thick and too heavy (=dangerous!).

Does your combination show any nitro proof ("N" stamp?).
If not use BP only or take care of your limbs. If yes I can get you load data.
One can use the same loads for 9,3x80R and 9,3x82 R.

Nitro proofed. Late manufacture, about c.1935. I know my Dad used IMR3031 powder and Barnes bullets. I'll slug the barrel for true diameter. I have 35 rounds of RWS ammo currently. Data would be MUCH appreciated <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Suggested loads from the book Dynamit Nobel "Wiederladen"

only for RWS 12,5 g Flatnose bullet (steel plated copper jacket, lead core - with .364" "driving band") COL 85,3 mm

1. 2,92 g Rottweil R 902 = 660 m/s
2. 3,31 g Rottweil R 903 = 660 m/s
3. 3,31 g Rottweil R 907 = 660 m/s

R 902 close to IMR 3031/IMR 4320
R 903 close to Win 748/Acc 2520
R 907 close to Win 748/Hodgdon H380

Thanks for the info Roe Deer. Do you know where there is a supply of the bullets?? My RWS loads have H-Mantle.

I will look up some more loads for you when I get home from work. I belive Sellier and Bellot makes a 193 grs bullet for this round, so you won`t run out in the nearest future.

Heard that RWS are dropping 9,3x72 from their program, so it looks like S&B are going to be the only company loading this round in the future.

Bullets for the 9.3x72R (.364 dia.) 193 gr. were available from Huntingtons manufactured by DKT, Inc. However, I heard that Chuck Hodges (The owner of DKT) passed away.

I used to see Chuck at Michigan gun shows, but haven't seen him for several years.

I don't have a current catalog from Huntingtons, so I don't know if the bullets are still made or not. You might check with them.
