allenday,
Best rule of thumb for reloading: there are no rules of thumb.
My personal rule of thumb for large magnum cases is to fill them near capacity with a slow burning powder and start there. IMR and H4350, by many reports I read, and IME tops out pressure wise in such large cases before it tops out in velocity potential, accuracy not withstanding as that varies rifle to rifle as well.
I never tell anyone a particular powder/bullet combo will assure them of accuracy. I will relate my personal experiences.
As a "rule of thumb" the same powder charge behind the same bullet will produce near like velocity from the same length bbl with like pressures, thought not identical...accuracy will not necessarily be the same.
My current load: 74grs R-19, 180 Horn. Interlock, Fed 215, Rem Brass, seated to just touch the lands. 3150fps, and consitent 1" 3-5 shot groups at 100 yards.

Mine likes RL 22, 76 grains behind a 180 Nosler Par for 3025 fps and results- .5 to .8 MOA. H4350 maxes out at 2940 but accuracy is so outstanding that if I still hunted I would be tempted to use it even though it is slower than the RL 22 load. It pushes 168 TSX's at 3250 with H4350 74 grains and around 1 MOA but RL 22, 79 grains, pushes them around 3200 fps and shoots around .6 MOA.

My 300 win is liking 75.5gr of RL 22 and and a little more with 180 TSX. I can't say anymore about the rifle, it's a great gun for what I do and I love how it shoots in all conditions.

Personally, I've fired over 8,000 rounds through various 300 Win. Mags. over the last 12 years, and I've tested just about every powder/bullet combination that you can think of, plus I've used the cartridge on nearly 200 big game animals in something like 20 states and 7 foreign countries. AD
Do you think you'll venture over to a 300 WSM anytime soon? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
