I just got ahold of a Sako L46 in 222 at the gun show this weekend, and have a historical question about it.

The action is L46 and the serial number dates it to be 1961. The action does not say Riihimaki, and nowhere on the rifle does it say Vixen. Is this correct?

I have seen a 1961 Sako ad, and my L46 sporter looks just like the one pictured, but I just thought that it would have either Riihimaki or Vixen stamped somewhere on the rifle.

Thanks in advance for your help!

No expert....but IIRC all my Sakos have the calibers stamped across the barrel in front of the action and have had Vixen, Forester, etc stamped on the off side of the barrel. Don't know if that really helps..give it some time. There are some Sako buffs here that know way more then I do.

Yea, I know my Forester has its name stamped on the barrel as well. Thanks though.

Is it a factory barrel (does it say made in Finaland/Sako on it)? I do believe some of the earlier models didn't have the specific model written on them.

So, are you saying it has zero markings? What exactly is stamped on the barrel?

You just might want to pull the stock off & see if anythings stamped into the underside of the barrel.

I did, on an unmarked .222 L46 Sporter, I got for a song - only to find "Remington" stamped there.

Yep, someone had rebarreled it with a Remington bbl.

Shot good, though...............................

On the top of the barrel by the action says Sako 222 with a couple proof markings, and on the side of the barrel it says Bofors Steel.
