Working up loads for a new 300 Winchester magnum using 180 grain Nosler Accubonds. I came across a good load using 76.0 grains of H4831. i am getting no pressure signs and velocity is about 3025 fps. I haven't been able to find much data for H4831 using the 180 Accubonds. I'd like to go up another .5- 1.0 grain. Anyone running a similar load? Anyone have quickload ? Thanks 163bc

That's exactly the same load I shoot in my 700 XCR. Mine is a 24" barrel and my velocity mirrors yours. No pressure signs at all for me either. H4831SC performed better in my rifle than RL22, RL25, H1000 or any other powder I tried with the 180's.

I noted that one of Mule Deer's "loads that work" in the .300 win mag is a 180 with 75.0 g of H4831. I've got some loaded up to run in my Savage, just haven't done it yet.

If what you have loaded shoots good, why would you want to add another half a grain? 25 feet per second more won't mean squat on game, and likely not on a target range.

163bc,

Quickload won't help at all. Contrary to what many handloaders apparently believe, it's a computer approximation of what MIGHT happen, not what actually happens in individual rifles.

Another grain will get you to 3065 fps. This wasn't figured from QL, but from the basic rule of internal ballistics that with single-base powders (and H4831 is one), velocity increases at the same rate as the powder charge.

agreed but I would like to optimize accuracy if possible & within acceptable pressures. 3 shot groups at 100 yds. were: 74.0 grains shot 1.5 inches, 75.0 shot 1.0 inch, 76.0 shot .75 inch. I'd like to go another 1/2 to full grain just to see what it will do for accuracy. I was hoping to find some data but all I have is a 25 year old Hodgdon manual that says 78.0 is max w/ 180 grain bullets but doesn't specify the bullet. Thanks for all the replies and feedback. 163bc

Thanks Kevin, My rifle is also a Rem 700 w/ 24 inch barrel. RL22 shoots good as does IMR 4350 in mine but H4831 seems to be just a tad sweeter in this particular rifle.

I'm using 77 grains of H4831sc with 180 grain Hornady Interlock BT, and I have no idea what the velocity is (though I once knew) and they shoot about the same as your best load so far. What is wrong with 3/4" groups?

IIRC my best group was 5/8" at 100 yards, but that was the best one. Some went closer to an inch. Still kills moose with aplomb. wink

Not a thing. But as you can see by the charges I was using accuracy was getting better as I climbed the ladder. Don't want to push it but why settle for 3/4 when you can have 1/2 ?? As a reloader I'm trying to wring every bit of accuracy I can out of a round. If I get top accuracy & velocity then I have something. I'm gonna load em up and see. I'll try to post a follow up report. Thanks, for the info. Sam

All the new manuals list 73 max and compressed, I couldn't imagine seeting 180NAB with 78-grains. I tried 75 grs after reading Mule Deer's suggestion and had best in my rifle around 74 grs.

Good Shooting!
