Have a Rem 7600 in the Whelen and am going to start doing some loading for it. As of now I got a pile of 225 Sierras and some 250 Nosler Partitions. Curious what ur guns have liked with these bullets and what powder? Really interested in 7600 Whelen data but all info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Roy

With the 225 Sierra keep the speed up this is a tough bullet it is the most accurate bullet in my Rem 700. Cloverleafs with RE7 powder a little faster with Varget but still under MOA. All of the 200 grain 35 Remington type bullets thrive on RE7 as well. No experience with the 250NP But RE 15 or Varget should be all you need.

I first started loading for the 35 Whelen and all i had handy was IMR-3031.

Found that with the 200 grain 56.0 worked better than factory.
For the 225-250 grain i dropped down to 53.5 grains and have been pleased.

Hope this helps some,by the way RL-15 and other powders work as well.

My current 35 wh like H4895 under a 250 Partition lit by a WLR. My previous 35 liked IMR 4064 under a 250 Hornady SP lit by a WLR. Both at 1" groups.

Noticed you're in SW PA. Where?

I'm from PA but moved to Tennessee about 5 years ago from Zelienople.

What kind of velocity were you getting with the H4895 and the 250 Partition?

Used a lot of 4064, both IMR & the Accurate version for many years, on quite a few hunts with no complaints. Over the last 3 or 4 years I have adopted Varget and a 250 gr Partition as my go to load. It is very accurate in my pair of Whelens. One of these bullets moving between 2450 & 2500 fps is devastating on game.
For years I thought the Whelen's modest velocity didn't require a Partition, but on the other hand, no down side either. In my case it was simply a little more accurate than the Hornady's I had been using.

I've loaded for a number of Whelens, and around 60 grains of Varget and a 225 worked in all of them. Usually gets around 2700 fps, so it's an easy 400+ yard load, and there are a bunch of 225's that penetrate deeply.

60 gr Varget with a 225 gr Accubond for over 2750 fps. I used 58 gr with the 225 Gr TSX since it was very accurate I stopped there, it was a bit under 2700 fps. For years I used around 53-53.5 gr gr AA 2015 with a bunch of different 225 gr bullets, 2660-2720 fps depending on the exact load. They were typically very accurate. I used a lot of RL 15 but eventually got tired of having to rework loads because lot to lot consistantcy wasn't good. In my new gun I have worked with mostly 200 gr loads and IMR 8208, 57 gr with the 200 gr Accubond and 56 gr with the 200 gr TTSX give speeds in the 2830-2850 fps range.

My Whelens like IMR 4064 with Sierra 225gr. also with Nosler 225gr.. I have a pound of RL 15 but have not worked up a load for it, though I lots of good reports on this powder in the Whelen.

My classic 700 dotes on 60 grs of Varget under a 225 NP and 57 grs of Rel 15 under the same bullet and the accubomb. I also had very good luck with the old standby IMR4064 under Sierras in another Whelen

60 gr of Varget and a 225 gr Accubond. Accurate, and worked well on a couple of bears. The 225 gr Sierra also shoots well with this load, but I have not hunted with that bullet.

60 grains of RL 15 works great in my LH 35 Whelen IMP with 225 GR Nosler Part.

Went to 3 different gun stores yesterday 2# of no name powder between all 3 stores. So you have to load what you can
obtain now, or have on stock.

In my current 22" Ruger, I'm getting 2450-2475 with 54.0 grains. I usually get 2500 in my Whelens with a 250 and have gotten 2550 with Re 15. I'm skippy happy with anything over 2400.

I've been to Saltsburg a couple of times. I used to work for PADEP in the mining program. You may have had a bit of mining in Indianna County wink

I run all RL15 in my Whelen.

RP cases, 60 grains of RL15 with the 250 PT and CCI250's. Speeds run right at 2600 and accuracy is excellent.

Same load for the 225 AB but I use 61 grains of RL15 with all the same specs runs a touch over 2700, and is also very accurate for me.

While they won't all go into one hole like that, they won't usually push anymore than one inch.

This is all out of my M700 CDL.

Mine is quite fond of 250 grain bullets and 56 grains of IMR 4320. It doesn't seem to matter which bullet either. It likes all the 250's.

Thank you sir.

Just finished reading Elmer's Rifles and Cartridges written in 1936.. Kinda reaffirms my love for the Whelen! Plus, it kinda winds me up to put one of them awesome 400 Whelen's together in the future.

Anyone ever try the Super performance powder in the Whelen. Sure advertise high velocities with the 200 grain bullet. Wander if it would handle the 225 or 250's?

I built a 400 Whelen recently as a big brother to my 35. You won't be disappointed. It has been a ball. It also smacks caribou really well.

I have read a ton on yours sir. I know if I happen to run across a 30-06 that I can grab easy enough, it'll make for a great 400 Whelen donor. That would be a pretty sweet rifle I believe and your results show it.

Mart, what is your favorite bullet so far with the 400?

I asked Hodgdon and the stuff they use in the Hornady factory loads isn't the same as Superfomance powder so they said it wouldn't work well in the Whelen. With 200's IMR 8208 gets you close to those ballistics.

My best load in my 7600 IMR 4320 with Speer 250 gr bullets work up to max load. Or RL 15. Look for similar burn rates on above powders. Never saw a Whelen that did not do well with similar powders.

Never realized 4320 was so close to RL15. That looks to be promising for the Whelen. Never thought of trying it. Might have to grab a can if I ever find any around.

My pet load for my .35 Whelen is 60.4 gr. of Re15 and the 225 gr. Barnes TSX. Velocity is 2710 FPS and groups run .50" to .75" from he bench. The rifle is a custon Mauser with 24" Barrel. That load proved to be too hot in a Remington M700 Classic I have and my Ruger M77 may have a headspace problem so I haven't tried the load in it. Brass is Remingtom and a Winchester WLR primer. I've taken two elk with that load so far, one at 150 yards and the other at 325 to 350 yards as estimated by my hunting partner and the guide. I ahve a few rifles but that mauser is getting to where it is my all time favorite. It's been said that the 30-06 is never a mistake but I have to say, neither is the .35 Whelen. But then I'll admit to being prejudiced. whistle grin

So far I'm liking the 400 grain Woodleigh but am currently testing the North Fork 360, Swift 350 A Frame, and Hawk 350. The Swift and NF are showing real promise. The Hawks tend to be inconsistent, one great group several not good groups.

I also picked up 150 Barnes 300 grain X bullets on an auction last week. I'm anxious to really wring them out in some testing.

Mart, what is the main powder for the 350-400's? Does RL15 work as well in the 400 as it does in the 35 Whelen?

I imagine that Woodleigh would be a beast. What kind of speeds does it come outta your rifle?

Kinda funny you mention it I just happened to get this black bear for meat yesterday with the 200 gr Accubond, two shots one through the chest and one through the shoulders, both exited. Load is 57 gr IMR 8208 that clocks in the 2820-2840 fps range. The heavier bullets are good but the 200 gr AB is great game bullet too.

Very nice Gerry. I would imagine those 200's with their thick jackets are very robust and shoulders on a bear at close range back that theory up. Great speed too!

In the thread I did not see mention of the Ramshot powders. Has anyone worked with Big Game or Hunter with the Whelen? I would think Big Game should show promise. Any ideas are appreciated. I have a good supply of both powders and am looking for loads.

Big Game looks pretty good to me, especially with the heavier bullets. Never thought of trying it, but I will be looking forward to Gerry's load work with the 275 Woodleighs. Those seem like a serious load for heavy game.. Loads like that would make old Elmer smile!

Man those look really good I'm going to have to try Big Game with the 225's as well. Once we are done hunting bears I'll head out and give it a whirl. Thanks buddy.

Figured I'd ask my question in this thread and keep all the Whelen info together. I've been reloading for about 6 months now and its all been for my .270 but I'm ready to start working up loads for my .35 Whelen, a Ruger all weather.. The only powder I've been able to find for now is IMR 4895. I've got some 250gr Partitions and some 225 TSX's but haven't had much luck finding loads for this powder/bullet combo.

Hodgdon has info for bullets of the same weight but not these two in particular. When loading for different bullets of the same weight but different manufacture do you back off the starting charge and if so how far? I'm really just looking for a starting point to work up from. Sorry for the newbie question and thanks for any help.

Here is some QL data to get you started. I would think IMR4895 would work just fine. Great speeds and if it shoots well, it'll be just as good as any other powder.

This should give you a place to start out with for your rifle. Good luck, but like many other Whelen, I bet it won't take long to find a good hunting load. I haven't seen many that didn't shoot real well right outta the gates.

In my 7600 56 GR 4320 with 250 GR Speer, around 2500 FPS.

With 225 GR NP 55.8 GR RL 15 around 2480 FPS but very accurate.

I used a lot of IMR 4064 and after some correspondence with Bob Hagel used IMR 4320 and now prefer that.
I am finding that Varget is also a good choice.

Beretz,

That's interesting QL data for IMR4895.

I've used 58 grains of IMR4895 and the Hornady 250-grain Spire Point in three .35 Whelens, one of them a Remington 760, without a hint of high pressures, and muzzle velocities in the 2500 fps range. Of course the Hornady produces somewhat less pressure than the Partition, but still.

Hodgdon's latest data shows 53.5 grains as maximum with IMR4895 and 250's, but I've seen .35 Whelen data take a nose-dive over the past decade or more. Alliant used to list 59 grains of RL-15 as max with a 250 only about 10 years ago, but now lists 54 grains, if I recall correctly.

I don't why this would be so. While there has been a general lowering of maximum loads with the use of piezo-electronic pressure equipment over the past 25-30 years, I don't know of any other cartridge that's seen the drastic reduction of max .35 Whelen loads. Maybe a few old rifles chambered back in the wildcat days had problems, but I've certainly seen to reason for the reduction in any of my rifles with SAAMI-standard chambers.

MD, I am not sure why the Whelen is so watered down myself, it seems it was highly built in Springfield's, 1917's, etc...(Pretty strong rifles right?) Probably the same reason the 257 lingers, but loaded to modern spec's runs very hard? Don't know.

I got my M700 CDL in 2005. Shot a few deer with the Remington ammo, 200 PSPCL's. I didn't like how they performed at all. I started looking for a better bullet and some data for it. I found some on 35cal.com and then I found the load you mentioned on Alliant's website with a 250. I worked up slowly with the 225 TSX, and got to 59 grains of RL15 and everything looked pretty mild there, so I crept up to 60.5, I averaged around 2750 with that bullet and excellent accuracy.

I see the same softening of the data you are. It's really too bad, as I believe a 35 Whelen and 338 Win Mag, loaded to the same specs are pretty close ballistically, at least to 400 yards. I use both the Whelen and 338 a bunch. Love the two cartridges.

Also, I am not sure what happened but you have a "I've seen a"... Then it stopped.

That was just the start of sentence I started to type, then decided to go a different direction--and failed to edit it out.

I'll have to ask some of the powder and bullet manufacturers I know why the drastic reduction in .35 Whelen data. The non-wimpy data we saw a decade ago came out LONG after Remington standardized the cartridge.

56.4 of vv140 and a 250 hot core for me. Same charge with Varget is just about as accurate.

That would be great information sir, if you find out, I'd love to hear the reasoning. I saw a report just recently, of Nosler Custom Ammo, loaded with 250 PT's and advertised at 2550FPS, only chrono'ed 2300 out of a Nosler TGR? Seems like 2300 is really tame. Heck, With a ton of powders, 2500 is pretty mild in most Whelens can get their without any real drama.

MD. I wonder if it is a similar problem like Remington did with the .280 except this time it was all worked up with bolt actions in mind and then they decided to go with pumps and semi-autos so downloaded the ammo?
I do know that when I did the load work up with the 250 gr. Speer SP, 59.0 gr. proved to be a bit too hot in my Ruger M77 and Remington M700 Classic. I hadn't yet acquired my Mauser yet, but it accepted 60.4 gr. of Re15 and the 225 gr. Barnes. I've reached 59.0 gr. with the Nosler Accubond and Partition but it starts getting uncomfortable with 60.0 gr.
During a discussion with another Whelen shooter I know, he said that were some very noticable variation in burning rates between the different lots of Re15. Maybe that's the source of the downloading. Aw hell, what do I know? whistle

Currently using 61.4 grains of TAC under a 225-grain Sierra Game King in Hornady Brass with Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primers. Velocity is just shy of 2,700 fps from a 22" Remington 700 Classic. I tested this load at 3.370” COAL, which is very long, but this rifle has the typical very long Remington throat. Groups are tight. Recoil is brisk.

Speer's latest rifle data (https://www.speer.com/reloading/rifle-data.html) has loads that bring the 35 Whelen very close to the 338 Winchester Magnum.

I’m loading 60.5 g of IMR4064 and 225 SGK at 2725fps. It’s a thumper on whitetails. I intend to play with 225 Accubonds and Partitions this summer….just because. In a 7600 with no recoil pad, it reminds me I’m still alive. These routinely shoot into 11/4”. I’m pretty sure the gun has more potential accuracy but I’ve yet to master bag placement with a pump (I’ve noticed a distinct difference in group size when the putting downward pressure on the fore grip).

I use H4895 for mine with the same bullet. I hear you on feeling alive when it goes off. Guilty accurate with that combo though.

Bump for this.

MD did you ever get a reasonable answer from bullet or powder folks (experts) on why the Whelen data has become so anemic? I mean the Varget data max's out a 49,500 cup with a 250gr bullet

When I had my .35 Whelen built 30+ years ago I did extensive load development work, the most accurate load I found at the time was IMR 4064 with a Sierra Game King 225gr. bullet. Lately I have been shooting a Ken Waters Pet Load consisting of IMR 3031 and a Hornady Inter-lok 200gr. RN bullet. This load produces three shot cloverleaf groups @ 100yds., a bullet recovered from a whitetail taken @ 100yds. was perfectly mushroomed and retained 66% of its original weight. All of the deer taken with the SGK 225gr. bullet were complete pass throughs.

This was the most accurate load I had for an older 35 Whelen. I've sold tht rifle and am getting a suppressor on the one I now have:

35 Whelen Remington C6283xxx, 700 BDL, 225 grain Ballistic tip, 9 ½, 53 grains IMR4895, 0.64 MOA

This one should be able to hit a whitetail at 100 yards too:

35 Whelen Remington C6283xxx,700 BDL, 200 grain Interlock, 9 ½, 58 grains H4895, 1.00 MOA

Only JWP475 shows best modern powder loads! I use CFE 223 under the 225 AB at 2850 fps (22") into sub-moa. This being my 3rd .35 Whelen, I've never seen numbers like that before using the typical "old powders".

The many years of the 35 Whelen being labeled a "fine woods" round still weigh heavily on it's reputation in many folks mind. With modern 225 and 250 grain sleek bullets fully loaded to its potential with modern powders, it is an easy 400 + yard hammer and the equal in trajectory with many other rounds more often thought of for longer range hunting. What it is not the equal of but in fact the better of, is the smack effect that the mid waist bullets of 338 to 375 bring to the game. I used to load and hunt my 25.5" 35 Whelen with the original Barnes 225 X at 2800 fps. The smack effect of that load was really something to witness. I don't push my old Whelen that hard anymore but the fact remains, the 35 Whelen really gets it done.
Best regards,

I don't see any Whelen loads.

Scroll down. For some reason, they don't show up in the locator tool but they're in the long index below.
