my dad has a savage 110 in 3006. he has decided he doesnt need 4 of them and has always wanted a 257 roberts. i told him we should be able to swap the barrel with a pre fit 257 roberts barrel and nut. from what i understand most guys like these on long actions for repeaters for the extra mag length. my question is how will the 257 roberts round feed in the 3006 mag. would this work find or would i have to alter the magazine or get a new mag all together.

It will feed fine. A friend of mine put a .260 Rem, barrel on a .270 long action and had no issues at all.

Just get ready to remove a tough nut..the older 110's are a real
bear to get the nut to break loose..soak in Kroil...heat with hair dryer...last resort...take a Dremel & cut the nut off...you can buy a new nut from Midway for $11....yes its a small shank

Never had a problem getting the nut off a Savage. With the right barrel nut wrench and a break over and a cheater they come right off. You do need a good barrel vise to hold barrel while applying this much torque.

If you are not keeping the old barrel, a pipe wrench will work to hold it during dis-assembly.

I use an action vise and a barrel nut wrench. After attaching the action wrench and the barrel nut wrench, I place the rifle on a piece of cardboard on the floor. Then I stand on the wrench handle with one foot and step on the barrel wrench with the other. A weight shift to the barrel nut wrench will crack it loose with no damage.

just be sure you get the right barrel. some of the older 110's had a rebated chamber that surrounded the bolt face. you can change the bolt but its extra expense and time.

The old ones with the rebated chamber had a thick ring on the barrel where the rear sight is dovetailed in and of course the stock had a cutout for it. That style was only produced for about 5 years (1958-1963) and then the current style was adopted. I have one of those that was rebarreled before I got it. The other differences are a nose on the bolt itself that fits into the barrel, and an upright ejector instead of the current button in the bolt face. Odds are slim that he has a first generation.

reason I mentioned this is I converted one years ago to 338-06 with a standard adams-bennet barrel and had to do extensive mods to get it running. Anyone want a 30-06 first gen 110 carbine barrel?

Removed the factory barrel from a Stevens 200 a year or so ago. Gent I shoot with had bought several of these same Stevens rifles like me when on sale for $179, just for the actions. He had trouble removing the barrel nuts on his...got frustrated and put the barrel in a bench pipe vise, clamped the heck out of the barrel to keep it from turning and then banged away on the lug wrench to free the barrel nut. Needless to say, the factory barrels he removed had some serious vise marks. I had the same problem and did end up using the pipe jaws in my bench vice too. However, I cut a short piece of PCV and then halfed it. Put the PCV between the pipe jaws and the barrel and tightened it down pretty good. Made sure the lettering stamped in the barrel made contact with the PCV. A few good wacks later with my hammer on the barrel nut tool, I'd freed the barrel nut without damaging the factory barrel.
