I have a 1940 Savage 99 in .300 Savage. When I load 5 rounds in the mag I have trouble when I feed the second round. When operationg the lever to bring it up from the spool-type magazine the round tends to jump up too high (tippinp up bulllet point high) so that the tip of the bullet jambs up against the upper face of the breech just above the chamber. I did reduce the mag spring tension by letting it wind down to half a turn (from one full turn) and that seems to help a little but not entirely. I wonder if the spring that brings the bullet stop out might be a little low in its value as the bullet stop seems to be very easy to push out of the way.
Does anyone have any trouoble shooting suggestions? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

When you're loading the magazine and you finally find that tricky spot and the cartridge goes in, be sure you push the cartridge back in the magazine as far as it will go so that the head is being held down under the arm of the cut off. If not it will be picked up at too low an angle and jam the tip of the bullet against the ramp. At least that sometimes happens to me.

Actually, I think that my problem is just the opposite. When I have a problem, the round is picked up at to steep an angle (point or bullet high) and the bullet nose hits the upper edge of the breech. The problelm you are describing sounds as though the bullet is hitting low (on the ramp) and not high like mine sometimes does. I will review your words when I get home and cycle some dummy rounds through my rifle tonight. Thanks for the input.

The Savage actually works best when it is cycled pretty quickly. Are you going real slow with it? I have problems at the bench if I go too slow with mine.

Take the forearm off and check the nut that holds the rotor assembly together .The face of the spindle shaft should be flush (more or less) with the outer face of the retaining nut(with the screw driver slot milled on it) Be carefull , it is a left hand thread ( opposite of lefty loosey - righty tighty ) I also milled a slot in a flathead bit to clear the threaded spindle shaft . I tell you this , cause that same exact problem arose right before the nut loosened up so much I couldn't get the lever to open after I took a shot . The rotor will have foward and aft movement . Hope it helps .
