Either of these, depending on whether I want long or short.

In another thread way back when Brad and I agreed that there was a line somewhere below the 6� lb mark that when crossed made a rifle difficult for us to do good work with.

I recall shooting a .284 of such a weight one time built on a 600 action and while I got it to group OK felt it was on the ragged edge of what I could handle well.

Interestingly the owner outweighed me by something like 75lb and his groups were a full 2" lower than mine.

As you mentioned, my cyber friend BobinNH does indeed usually nail it. It's almost like he's done this a time or two.

My "walking around rifle" these days is a money pit .270 that started with a wartime 98 action and a takeoff Parker Hale Featherweight barrel in .270.

I installed a Timney Buehler safety, FN extractor, Wolff Blitzschnell mainspring, Timney trigger, 3.6 oz aluminum bottom metal, ultra ugly Bushnell lightweight rings, Leupold 6X Compact and it all sits in a Wildcat Composites 20oz stock.

Oh, it's 7lbs on the nose with 5 130gr TTSX or GMX in the magazine.

Like you kutenay, there's really no place we hunt that is not in the mountains, so I guess that qualifies it as a mountain rifle?

Here's it's laying on a whitetail from the mountain up behind the house.


The walking around rifle that it replaced is a .308 Norma that I put together on a Ruger 77 tang model - used to be a .338 actually - and with it's lighter Claro stock weighs just a wee bit over 8lbs.

Strangely enough the way fate worked out it killed this buck within spitting distance of the one above.


While I can do about equal work with either rifle, I'd have to admit that I appreciate the pound less of the .270 if the walks get further and/or steeper than usual.

Anyway that's just another BC hunters take on it and in true 'Fire tradition other's mileage may vary.

Lots of things work for mountain rifles because we have lots of cartridges that behave like 270's and 280's....but in the end, if you have one of those,there isn't much sense in buying anything else.

Yup, based on the experience I have had since my first hunting season in 1964, ownership of 125-150 big game rifles since 1965 and use of many different cartridges, I have to agree.

I am at that time of life, when my gun collection must be sold and only a very few kept and this is about as much fun as a swift kick in the, well, you know....

IF, I CAN do what I really should and eventually must, I will definitely keep my P-64 Fwt. .270s and my modded Brno 21/22 rifles, the 60mm barrel variation, rechambered to .280 Rem.

These are easy to pack all day, shoot well and hit hard and Bob is right here, there really is nothing "better" for the mountains and not much as good.
