Christmas in July! The mailman delivered my new trade gun yesterday. Here she is. It's a North Star West Chief's grade trade gun, 62 cal / 20 gauge smooth bore. I'm going to the range Friday, reports to follow.

I hope you like it! I have heard only good reports about them from folks on the Traditional Muzzleloaders forum. Very nice!

The first range session was an adventure. A thunder storm came up and dumped a flood on us. Wind, lightning, heavy rain. Everything I had got soaked, guns included.
But, the trade gun is a sweet shooter! I shot round balls with ticking patches and loads of 2-F from 60 to 80 grains. The windage is dead on at 50 yards but the POI is low at six o'clock. From a rest with sand bags I was getting groups of one inch.
The front sight (there's no rear sight) is very tall and I can file it down to raise the poi easily enough.
I didn't get to try any shot loads before the weather turned nasty. I'm looking forward to getting back out for more shooting.

I have a Caywood smooth bore, It is the Wilson gun in 20 gauge. Have taken one deer and two turkeys with it.
There is a fine line between too much powder and too little when shooting bird shot. You will get great patterns at lower powder loads and will blow the pattern apart at higher ones. Problem is you will have poor penetration and killing power with light tight loads. I found if I could penetrate both sides of a Dinty Moore stew can, I had enough killing power. You can keep moving the can further away until you stop getting good penetration and you will then know your killing range. I also found that putting tow or shredded burlap material on top of the shot, it did not seem to spread the shot like a card on top would. They are fun to shoot and hunt with. I got my limit of squirrels one perfect morning with mine. Good Luck and Enjoy....
There are no bad days hunting elk, some are just better.

Fun ain't they? I have a NSW Early English in .62 that is jugged. Throws a wicked good shot pattern as well as a round ball.
