Mtn: you know I also don't buy meat at the store. My wife buy some chicken though. We can get any meat in most towns in ak but I spend a lot money and time every year to assure that I only have to eat wild game and fish cause its my lifestyle. We have costcos in most major cities and I could save a lot of money if I just got my meat there!

While others say milk is expensive, that's what Costco's is for. 2 gallons for $6.26. I paid more than that every where else I have lived at. This is my first season to hunt here, but I have been able to put fish in the freezer since I got here. As sollybug said, meat at Costco's is also cheaper, as well as the commisary for those of us in the military, milk is not cheap there though. About the only chain restaruants I miss is Chili's and Red Lobster, which neither are here. Chili's was, but did not pay their franchise fees and they were shutdown.

Nope you never can put a price on going and catching a salmon or trout for dinner with your children. You are very lucky in that regard. I myself never married so I don't have any. Its been bothering me a little of late since I am fast approaching 60. I got 18 months to go. Looks like the little guy likes to eat too. There are times when I still feel like I am a little boy myself. Especially when I go to old fishing holes were I caught my first trout. I live just a 1.5 miles from that very spot. 1961 is so long ago now. You are a very fortunate ptarmigan

I don't even care for top grade beef steaks out there, too bland for me. You've obviously never eaten Montana beef.

I doubt that, once you get a taste for wild game, farm raised just flat doesn't taste right. I can and do appreciate both, but those that tell others how they should taste and appreciate are all wet.

Hey! mind your own business, would'ya? (Thinking we could have a very pleasant time - or more -with any of Alaska's fine beers for the price one pays out this way for 750 ml of likker. Would a gross of beer be gross? )

The 10-y-o wants to kill his first moose this fall, the 12-y-o, a bear. The older killed a beluga in July which made their mama one happy Eskimo (as well as a whole bunch of others who got a share.)

Outstanding, they have no doubts where dinner comes from and how to get it done! I may never make it to AK. but I hunt vicariously through posts from the North! Have a great season!

Well it sure as hell aint cheap catching and/or killing your dinner here, but I can't put a price on spending time with my kids in pursuit. Had my youngest out today, he wanted to catch dinner for us.....and he didn't disappoint. Pure awesome, guy! Thanks for sharing.
