I shot a deer at 400 yards once .I fired 1000 rounds .Reloads were good for me that year 1997 I think. Well shot a doe because I had a permit for one. an I felt great about the shot .Lay down on a fire lane took my time never new I was there. The 270 Savage 110 an Burris 2 fulfeild scope ,I shot 100 yards 5/8 groups all the time with this gun set up.Well the deer went down one shot raise the gun till the scope was level with the ears then went back to center of front left leg an shot . The next doe was same way same place but I wanted to see-try something held right on the deer fired an bullet was in the now at the feet so that is how far it drops. Now 98.5% of hunters the long shots are 100 to 200 yards they don't need no more . Show are great on these shots but thier shows So men make great shots not cripple shots on game Thanks

50yards would be the normal maximum range when I go hunting (pigs, foxes, rabbits) with most shots well under this distance (15 to 20yds).

I have shot deer at 150yds.

The longest shots I have taken is at 200yards - I shot 7 goats before they realised that something was going on and decided to leave the area (they're not the brightest animal in the paddock).

Speak for yourself. But I do agree, most folks don't have business at 200 yards. Of course 400 is gravy easy for those that extend the effort.

Thats the bad part though, most folks are too lazy to extend the effort required.

and while I'm thinking of it, how flippin stupid are you? Fire at in line with front legs, to see how far it drops.

If you'd have calculated the wind right... and shot a good shot, you'd have broken a front leg low.

Looser.

Anyone that has ever looked at a drop chart knows most standard rounds drop 24" at 400 or so sighted in at 200. So yes, holding dead on a deer at 400 you would miss.

+1

5 years ago, I would have called 300 yards a long shot. Now, with a good rest and favorable conditions, 500 is a chip shot.

A little bit of specialized equipment, an accurate rifle and some (maybe lots of) practice is all that it takes.

The cuts we hunt make a 300 yard shot close most of the deer and elk our crew shoots are between 300 and 800 when the only option is long shots our equipment and practice adapted to the distance

That's the answer - the terrain. The countryside I hunt in is either flat, and even the small bushes limit the distance, or hilly and timbered.

Having said that though, there is one property I go to that has a clear hilltop and is an excellant vantage point to the clearings on the surrounding hills. One of my friends hunts the same property (I've never been on a hunt with him though) and shoots fallow deer at up to 700m from this hill. He uses a sporter 338RUM (or is it 340RUM?). I think the rifle is a Browning. Sporter barrel but "just under"-moa performer.

I met a guy shooting last weekend. Asked me how far my target was, and I told him 400yds. His response "I can't shoot that far."

Not sure what he meant, he had an '06 with a scope. He then told me he had drawn two bighorn tags in his life, but never shot one. Told me he got 450 from one, but too far to shoot. At least he knows his limits, but a couple weekends practicing at the range and he would have killed that sheep.

A 100-200 yard max may work for you guys east of the Mississippi, but out here, conditions are a little different. Out here we need to leave the tree-stands at home, and be ready to shoot 300 yards.

My friends dad missed a chance at a 180 mulie a few years back. It was bedded and he snuck up to 200 yards. Thought it was too far so tried to sneak closer. Deer got up and left. 200 yards on a bedded mulie is a wet dream.
