The first moose I have memory of seeing shot was broadside and lock-kneed on a lake shore. My father was shooting a 308Norma and probably using Speer bullets. (Beauty of his records is that I could go back right now and find exactly what he used and the date, at minimum.) We were in a canoe out on the lake.

At the first shot the moose "humped up" a bit. He continued shooting and the moose stood there, never moving. It took long minutes before the moose finally collapsed. Every shot was exactly where he wanted it and the moose was dead on the first shot. All the rest were insurance...

Hit bone with any bullet and it will explode and leave shrapnel. Of the big game I have taken with the Accubonds, most have been 1-shot kills double lung pass thru penetration. Small entrance, huge exit wound. Pulverized lungs and other organs.

Maybe it's just me, but I have never had issues. I have seen explosions with Partition Golds I use to use in my 300WM.

And there lies my huge beef with Accubombs... Many bullets surpass them for lethality and among those many do a small fraction of the meat wasting... Seeing an entire moose shoulder wasted is not something I will ever accept from a bullet again.

Looks like its going to be the 210 partition. Turns out my rifle is finicky...bout 2" groups for my best load. Two touching and the third bullet opens the group a bit. Pleanty accurate for moose!:)

since moose in maine aren't usually shot at any great distance, josh curious why that load versus say a 250 np at a not so screaming velocity?

Really never thought about using anything heavier than 210 or so...just seems right in the 338 federal. Not to mention a 250gr partition would take up alot of case capacity and i would think you might be able to get 2200fps (that is a guess). Now...im fully aware that would work just fine on about any animal around, but like i said the 210 just seems like the ideal bullet in the federal.

ah, 338 federal. gotcha. so, the 210 np was designed for 338 wm velocities and now at 338 federal speeds you will likely get better bullet integrity and performance.

good hunting.

Hey Josh,

I hear you. Was at the range yesterday with my 338 WM and had 225 TTSXs touching at 100 yards.

We are heading up sat and will probably get in to Ross lake early Sunday. Should be a lot of fun!

IMO , the 180's will work for your 338 Federal.

I use 180's ABs in my 300WM for everything here in Alberta. Will be used on my moose this year...hard to break tradition of 22years using my 300WM at moose camp!

I had a 338F for a few years. Only shot a bear and a calf moose with it though. Used 225 Hornady Interbonds and they blew the fk apart on the calves shoulder socket.

I ran 160 TTSXs in it afterwards at 3000fps and figured that was the ticket. But never got to kill anything with it before I sold it.

Turns out the Partition worked really well. Recovered from the off side ribs. MV 2550 FPS, shot at 94 yards.
