Looking to get a voice recognition software program, but do not know what to look for/get. Program would be for home use/ homework and up to 5 people.

Okay, all joking aside, our hospital uses Dragon Speak for the doctors to do their dictation. I couldn't tell you much about it from personal use but I know we always evaluate several different software packages before deciding on one and this was the one that came out on top of that search.

Yes, St. Luke's.

It looks like we are using Dragon Medically Speaking which is customized for medical terms. The documentation I could find doesn't show a version. The radiologists are using RadWhere by Nuance but again, I don't have any info on the current version they are using.

I've been using Dragon for my medical dictation for years. It's a very good program, highly accurate, fast, and customizable for each user.

It works OK with the cheap microphone included with the software, but if you really want to make it work you need to upgrade to a better mic.

Windows 7 has voice recognition built in (which few people know because Microsoft does not advertise it much).

If Windows 7 is what you are using, you should give it a try first before spending a lot of money.

I have introduced a few people to voice recognition in Windows, and it worked so well that they never felt the need to go beyond this.

If you have a "non-standard" accent (say, a nice southern drawl like Mickey Coleman here! smile commercial software tends to be more "trainable" and may perform better for you.

By the way, Vista has voice recognition too but I have not used it so I don't know how different it may be (if any).

HERE are Microsoft's Instructions for setting up voice recognition in Windows 7.
