hey all im new to thsi board and look forward to havin a good time<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

savage model 24 .22lr over .410 3" chamber that someone wants to trade for my digital camera. looks to be in very good shape for being an older gun. what has me puzzled is the barrels are a nice deep blue but the reciever looks like there is barely any bluing at all and has sort of a rainbow color if its in the right light

how much would this thing be worth? if i do trade, how accurate are these things usually? full choke in it? doesnt say on the barrel stamp.

if i decide to sell it after the trade, will it be something that will take forever to sell or will it go quick?

it has the barrel selector on the side of the reciever

Thats a case hardened reciever, it's correct for the gun.

Shouldn't take long to sell if the price is fair.

Be worth 100$ bill to me...all day long.
I'm confident of doubling my money when i sell.

The gun in the picture is worth $275 to $375 US. Just got back from Tulsa and saw several of them there. JOHN

Hi ch312....

I don't know where you are (in Canada) but in these parts the price sounds about right. .22/.410 is the most common variation and they're popular as a grouse (and other small critter) gun.

When I was a kid, I used to use a borrowed 24 in .22/.410 and was never able to hit anything with the .410 barrel. As an adult, I decided to look for a .22/20ga and it took me a long time (~2 years) before I found one. (ended up buying from an online site based in ontario). The one in the pict is about the same vintage as mine (mine's a 1969), but mine is the fancier "deluxe" one. (checkered stock, nickel coloured receiver with engraving). ---see attachment---

Other years had the opening mechanism as a button in front of the trigger guard and a double (spurred) hammer for selecting the barrel instead of the slide button like the one in the pict.

If I remember right I think I paid $350 for mine a couple years back. I would want more for it now. I don't think 24's are hard to sell at all, so you could probably rid yourself of it easily if it isn't your cup of tea.

There's some reading for you on another site:

savage 24 page

good luck

I've been told that they're no longer making the .22 rimfire/.410 bore combination.

If this is true, that means the value of one will undoubtedly increase as the supply "dries up".

Jus' thought I'd mention it... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Congrat's! In a year or two, your camera would've probably been worth next to nothing... the combo gun will be worth more than it is today.

Hmm, about the forend, on mine there is no screw, it's held on like the forend of a single shot shotgun. Pull the tip of the forend wood down (it's spring loaded) it should pop off and then the barrels lift out of the receiver. Since your's has a screw, maybe it's different (?) So DON'T FORCE IT.. Not sure, maybe the action needs to be closed to get it off (?).

look on the savage 24 page, there are exploded parts diagrams I think.

good luck.

Put the screw back in. It holds the forend spring assembly in place. Pull down on the front of the forend and it will snap off. Your gun looks pretty minty so the spring may be pretty stiff.

Good shooting,

BTW,

It's good that the spring is stiff... I used to shoot a single-shot 12 ga... with 3" magnums every once in a while the forend would come off in your hand from recoil... not enjoyable. It needed to wear a stylish band of black electrical tape.
