I'm running a 700 SS mtn in 270 this year, and have been a big model 70 fan.
Load development consisted of 130 ballistic tips, H4831 in Winchester cases, end of story. Easily sub 1" groups, if you let the barrel cool after the first couple! For hunting, that's fine by me. Bare rifle weighs 6lb 6 ounces, and those B&C mtn rifle stocks fit me well (a significant part of the reason I went that way). I found the EW stocks about like a fence post, fit-wise. A previous FN model 70 fwt was right at 7lbs, bare rifle, heavier than I like.

Of the two choices requested, I would choose the Model 70 and not look back.

As for other choices; I like bacon.

It's official. I missed the selfie deadline so I'm Maser's sock puppet because rene and the Polish half of the fubar twins have decided that I am.

I've been thinking real serious about jumping on the 7/08 band wagon. My thoughts were geared a bit toward the tikka lite however I do believe after reading this thread I am swayed toward the model 70. The tikka comes with a 1 in 9 1/2 twist and twist rate ultimately will be the deciding factor for me

Anyone know what the twist is on the model 70?

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the EW feels like a 2x4. Was wondering if I was just spoilt by the Montana which actually has a wrist a little slimmer than I'd prefer.

Also read some posts about the EW bolt hitting the B&C stock when pulled rearward.

The 700 Mtn seems like the better deal if the stock dimensions are decent. I think you can get one for $900 or less and I don't think too many complain about the B&C on that rifle. Same stock as the Ti?

An Ult Shadow SS would cost around $900 with plastic stock, plus what $500+ for the Edge? I like the 70 plus Edge, but the 700 Mtn is a lot less bucks.

A fella could stock an ADL dicks special in a McMillan for shy of $1k...BTDT, then got swooned by the 260. 7#12oz all done with. 24" tube, for conversation.

Sounds mucho better than the Mtn and best bang for the bucks by far.

Bi-Mart sell those Remmies like Dick's for even less money.

Now that I think about it, I think there is a Rem rebate too.

No wrong answers here. I'd trip my 260 for JMR's rig in a heartbeat. Maybe even half a beat.......

you guys are not alone. It's funny that the ergos of the B&C EW stocks are so much worse than the B&C MR/Ti stocks. the bolt won't bonk the stock on SA EW though. it stops short of contact.

The B&C Mt rifle stock is only slightly trimmer, and only because it has no aluminum bedding block. It is a weak stock that is easily broken. The EW stock is a bit thicker and heavier, but has strength. I would have to replace either.

A busted B&C stock. The owner didn't drop it, just shot it and the recoil busted the stock. I prefer the Edge, but would much rather have the factory EW over the Mt rifle stock even if it weighs more and is a little thicker. If you really want the lightest rifle, at the least cost, buy the Kimber.

of course you forget to mention that rifle was shot in a lead sled.

and no matter how you dice it, the Winchester will be ~6 oz heavier.

and yes to the Kimber. an M7/Edge comes close though. mine, (7-08)

Banged away lots of full house 180 grain loads in my Gen 1, 300 Shamwow.

Can't claim to have nuked the TI stock either.

yea...this is a .375 Ultra in an AK Ti (still trimmer than the EW handle) that has eaten oodles of powder and the stock is holding up fine, despite being hogged out for the Badger Ordinance bottom M4 metal. I've never used a lead sled though...

I sure do love the looks of that sling. Better go order one before my beer wears off

There are lots of options, but to answer to OP:

While they are both great shooters, my vote, between the current 700 Mountain Rifle and a 70 EW, goes to the EW.

I have had numerous 700 MR's, and currently have a LSS Mtn in 7-08. Although it is not totally an apples to apples comparison, I also shoot a 70 EW in 30-06.

The LSS is a great shooter, but for me, the 70 EW is a little easier to shoot accurately. I don't mind the stock shape, and I think it carries fine. YMMV.

In my opinion, the EW is more rifle for the money. The action and barrel seem to be better finished, and of higher quality. I think it balances more evenly than the current Mtn rifle, and looks better too. I thought that the old LSS laminated stock matched the pencil thin Mtn rifle stock, as the older stock is thinner and matched the barrel better.

You can't go wrong with either rifle, though.

I agree with some others, that the Kimber Montana would also be a good choice. It'd probably run you an extra $200-300. I have had good luck with the three Kimbers I have owned, and still have a Montana in 243. The Kimber is even lighter than the Mtn Rifle, which means easier to carry, and a bit harder to shoot consistently (at least for me).

love mine. I get the ones with Chicago screws so I can change swivels or put them on rifles with captive swivels (like Ruger boat paddles)
