What's the best way to replace the J-lock on a Remington 700?

I need black matte, and I assume that I should replace the firing pin/spring as well.

What are my options? Which one matches best with the finish? Any cool looks out there?

Look at Pacific tool, I belive they make some cool Remy bolt parts. Brownells "probably" sell a shroud for the 700. keep us posted

Unless things have changed, PT&G (Pacific Tool) manufactures both the Callahan and the Gre-Tan units. You may want to check with them on matching your finish. I have used both the Callahan as well as the Gre-Tan and was happy with both. I have never used a Pierce but they have a good reputation.

I've had good luck with a few GreTans. No experience with the others.

Not sure about the Pierce but I think the Callahan is made by PTG?? I've had several Gre-tan and PTG and like the PTG best.

DD,

I replaced my J-Lock shroud with a PTG unit. Nothing negative to report, and they make three pins--an aluminum, a fluted steel, and a regular steel. I have the fluted steel. I dry fire with no issues, but I have heard some people comment you shouldn't dry fire with an aluminum pin

Do you think the fluted steel gains anything in reality?

Is it faster locktime than the regular steel?
Is it actually any lighter?

No.

I have no way to measure locktime.

I didn't weigh my original, and I haven't weighed my current bolt.

I got the fluted pin because it was the same price, weighed less (supposedly reducing lock time), and was immediately available. I doubt the difference is significant. Just my 2 cents.

Get a complete shroud/cocking piece and firing pin assembly from PT&G.

Ive replaced a dozen or so firing pins for myself and others. The Pierce gave the smoothest cocking, Gre-Tan worked fine, two of the Callahan's galled on the cocking ramp and I had to do some judicious filing and polishing on the cocking ramp to make servicable.

I didn't know PT&G were making the Callahan's. I've heard nothing but good stuff about the PT&G firing pin assemblies and am getting set to order one......

I've just replaced mine with the factory Remington OEM assembly, mainly to have it match.
