I just bought a 99F in .300. The lever boss code is a B, so 1950? The serial number is 774,7xx.

Please take a look at the pictures. Looks mostly original, has an extra hole in the forearm, refinished? wood, and reblued? The lever is blued instead of case colored.

Super clean bore, tapped for a scope, no tang cracks, and shoots an inch. The previous owner picked it up at an estate sale a couple of years ago because he likes to buy various calibers, develop loads for them, then sell and start over. He included a target with the load he used to shoot minute of angle.

I paid $550.00 as is, with a bag of new brass thrown in. For Montana that seemed a pretty fair price. I wanted a hunting rifle. Share your knowledge and experience and let me know what you think. I own two 50's EGs in .300 but my 99 knowledge is limited.

Thanks, Brett [img:left][Linked Image][/img] [img:left][Linked Image][/img] [img:left][Linked Image][/img] [img:left][Linked Image][/img] [img:left][Linked Image][/img] [img:left][Linked Image][/img] [img:left][/img] [img:left][/img] [img:left][/img]

Should be a mid 50's gun. My book is at home, but I think F's came out in 1955?? Code for 55 would be G. Looks reblued as levers were case colored. Wood looks in good shaped except for extra holes. As you stated they do shoot well. The two I have do.

The pros will be along later. I am just a rookie here.

Lever date code should be a G for 1955, F's weren't around in 1950 so it's definitely not that.

I'm going to say refinished/reblued with the sling studs added after market. They definitely didn't sand it down or screw up the checkering though, that's very good. Lever should be case colored.

Nice hunting rifle, you're going to enjoy that one.

Thanks diamondjim and Calhoun.

The lever boss code was very faint and looked like an eight or a six so I thought it was a B. You're right it must be a G if F's weren't manufactured until 1955.

The checkering is still good so I wasn't completely sure it had been refinished, but it didn't look original even to me. The sling studs were added and someone put a couple of holes in the forearm.

Thanks again. I know this wasn't a great price, but the last couple of 99's I looked at here in Montana were rough and the asking prices were $800 and $850.

Price can be subjective, of course depending on region, as you well know. If it makes ya happy, that is all that matters.
I know have overpaid for stuff, but hey I am the only one I have to please. wink

Just about as good as it gets for a hunting rifle. Nice looking too! Good job!

Fine hunting rifle at a fairly reasonable price. I've seen lesser 99s for which guys have paid more. Built when Savage was still doing a lot of hand-work on their 99s. I.E., a good one.

Thank you gentlemen...I'm pretty excited about it.

I still might have a chance to hunt it this fall. Brett

+1

I have one just like it with a Leupold 4x28mm M8. It is my favorite hunting rifle I have ever owned.
