I am sure they had a reason to use the aluminum vs steel, material cost would be about the same.

Only other odd recoil lug I can think of is the Steyr SSG - 69 series, 40 years plus of military use all over the globe and NO recoil lug. Just the screws and action fit to stock. Never heard complaints about their longevity other than their mags and trigger guards. Spence
