The old saying is 22 for fur and 177 for feathers. While I agree up to a point, I've killed lots of fur with 177's. I prefer a 22 for general hunting, but I've killed animals as large as groundhogs with high powered 177 rifles with a shot to the head. The 177 will shoot flatter and the ammo is generally cheaper and easier to find in a wide selection of pellet styles and weights.

The pump master 22 only puts out 500fps in 22. Is this enough for furr at short range.

Who makes the PC 77 Pumpmaster air rifle ? I have Benjamin Mdl 312,and 342 22 Cal , Sheridan 20 Cal Blue Streak, and 20 Cal Blue Streaks made by Crosman.. I also use a Beeman R-1 17 Cal and Beeman GS 1000 22 Cal spring powered air rifles. A 22 Cal pellet with a MV of 500 fps velocity would have very little ft/lb of energy at 20 yards.. I would not use it for small game but might try it on small birds...

500 fps with a .22 is more than enough power at short range, 30 yards or less.
Presuming the pellet you're using is 14gr @ 500fps, that's 7.7 ftlb. Let's see a squirrel head stand up to that.
