I just picked up a 3 hole model 7 FS locally (an hour ago) and am looking for a base and rings. I'd like to use talley lightweights, but will have to drill and tap a 4th hole. My questions are:

Is there enough material in the receiver for the 4th hole? What height talleys would I use for a bushnell elite 2-7x32? (I'm thinking low)

Thanks for the help.

Standard fare to punch a 4th hole in the rear,on a Seven. If you can suffer the weight, the Leupie DD XP-100 base wearing Burris Signature rings,is a rock solid way to fly.

Seven wearing same,amidship.

Pun be intended.

4th hole drilled on a Seven. It wears 2pc(obviously) steel Warne's with signatures.

OEM 4-hole Seven in LW's.

Addendum:(I forgot about [bleep] DNZ's)

My DNZ beef is ring spacing and ring cap surface area,as extrapolated to LW's on like rifles.

Have pics some where of DNZ's on a Seven. Pard has 'em on a retired 25-284.

I opted for a DNZ one-piece base/integral ring setup for my 3-hole Model 7. It's a pretty lightweight option.

One nice thing about the short rear bridge on M7/600 rifles is that the mounting height can be set very low, as the power ring won't hit the back "shelf" of the rear base, as there is none. I run Talley X-lows on my 660, which was DT'd for a 4th hole. The bolt handle barely clears the ocular on a 2-7x33 and the cheekweld is nice. Have a MR pattern coming for my 7SAUM M7 and will likely replace the Talley lows with X-lows. BC caps at the back are sometimes a problem with bolt handle clearance though.

Think ex-low. Your cheekweld will thank you.

I'm using Talley LW Low on 2 Model 7 with Bushnell 3200 2-7x32 Firefly. I doubt extra low would let the bolt clear the ocular. Both rifles were born as a 3 hole receiver. One had the fourth hole installed but the other I just mounted the rear base with one screw. It's a 7mm-08 and works fine so far.

edit: With the smaller ocular of the Leupold 2-7 extra low would probably work.

Talley XLs will work unless you want to use BC caps on a standard Leupold scope

I've got extra lows on my Model 7 with a Leupold 2-7x32 and alumina caps.

I'm guessing as mentioned Leupolds are about the only option that will work with the extra lows that will allow the bolt to clear the eye piece.

If you want to got the "sleek" route, Gentry and S&K would be the way to go for the Seven. Conetrol is adding dead weight to that rig.

I have two Model Sevens with three holes. One wears a one piece Leupold base with low rings and the other a DNZ mount in X-low. The Leupold set up is fine, but I like the DNZ much better. After the season, I am going to replace the Leupold with another DNZ mount.
