58.0/IMR4350/150NBT/CCI200

I just picked up an older [1968] Winchester 70 this summer, clean, nice rifle; mounted a period correct Redfield 4-12 scope I had laying around.

I tried a few different loads surrounding the Nosler 150 grain Ballistic Tip using Varget, IMR4064, IMR4350, and a few other powders I had laying around. IMR 4350 seemed to be the most consistently accurate. At 50 grains, Varget would throw two nearly through one hole, then would always toss the third round opening up the groups to around two inches. IMR 4064 just plain sucked, I couldn't keep anything under about two inches despite the powder charge. As for the IMR 4350, 58 grains seemed to be the magic number, as it will CONSISTENTLY put FIVE shots into about an inch at 100 yards over and over again.

I seated the 150NBT's to .010" short of the lands, as is customary for my reloads when I'm searching for accuracy.

Anyone have real world speeds with Superformace and 180 grainers in the '06? Hodgdon's sight indicates 2,840 with a max load. Has anyone come close to that in a 24' barrel?

I have WW brass, WLR and Fed 215 primers along with Hornady 180 BTSPs on hand for what it is worth.

Thanks

How many grains of powder are stuffed in there?

Some of my 06 hunting loads were worked up in an old Ruger M-77 with a very long throat so I am hesitant to post them. They could be way to warm in someone elses rifle. Enjoying the thread and everyones recipes though.

Wow! I always thought of myself as a pretty reasonable shot, but I'm leaving my guns at home if you're around!

Holy smokes! What barrel length? I'm shooting 208 amax's with Ramshot Hunter around 2700 fps with 24" barrel.

The one I've "settled on" for my favorite:
56 grains of Reloader 17
Barnes TTSX 168 grain (tipped TSX)
Federal large rifle primer

This load cooks along at about 100fps faster than IMR 4350, without any pressure signs whatsoever. (RL17 is advertised to pick up speed at a more uniform pressure curve, and it does.)

I took Barnes technical advise and hold the bullet a full .070 from the lands, and it really does increase accuracy to sub moa in my 06. (this bullet likes a small jump)

don't know why more don't use RL17, as it is a sweetheart.

180 Sierra or Woodleigh and 56.5 of H4350. Clocked it today at 2841 fps with an extreme spread of 11 fps. Brand new 26" Benchmark 5R barrel.

Having read through most of the recipes for 06 here, and just starting to load for it myself, I have noticed that no one makes mention of using Win 760. I only bring this up because I have been offered a new 8lb jug of it and the reloading books all show it as a good powder for the 06. Any opinions or experiences to share out there?

I haven't used the 760 branded powder but, do use H-414 which is the same powder. My Husqvarna really likes it in full power loads. Try it, you'll like it!:-)

My .30/06 loves 760 by the bucket load. A favored load is 150gn Partitions over 62gn for 3080fps. 59grains with 180's tops 2800fps plus, and cases fall out of the chamber.

My loads tend to be a little higher than you see around here because of my sloppy chamber.

THe 220's zip into .5MOA using 55 grains in my rifle and many blokes are using charges around that with 180's so it pays to beware of recommended loads. These are mine for a reason, they are mine.

I do however, recommend you grab that keg while it is available. 8 pounds can kill a lot of game.

Guy is selling me a sealed 8pds for $130 in town here, so no shipping. My next question is this, can Fed 215 LRMP be used with this powder? I once lived in Alaska and hunted with a 7mm ultra mag that used these magnum primers so I I have quite a few that I don't need anymore, but someone told me I could use them for the Win 760 ball powder?

That is an excellent price and the 215 primers will work fine. Congratulations!
