If I were to build a traditional 404 Jeffery what action should I use? K98 Mauser, P14, anything else? What are your thoughts? I would like to build a rifle similar to what the African Game departments used in the early days.

Do you want one like the first early ones that were built on standard M-98 actions like this one ?

or one of the later ones that were built on magnum actions ?

Were some of the 404's employed to service Magnum actions? I would like to stay as traditional as I can.

I left it in camp this year but will have to bring it in and show it to you. It is a pretty neat old rifle that was completed in Jan of 1907 and purchased for an Alaskan brown bear hunt.

Here it is with one of the new 416 Ruger African rifles --- they are mighty close in weight, balance, handling and performance

And compared with the Rigby 416's which were built on the largest Magnum Mauser actions they are much lighter and slimmer

On other sites I have posted more closeup photos of the action and stock ins letting

Is it smart to build a 404 Jeffery on a standard length Mauser 98 action? I hear mixed reviews. Lots of cartridges have been shoehorned into standard length 98's and just because it's been done doesn't mean it's the brightest. Any opinions?

Thanks.

im thinking of building one on my M1917......especially since learning Jeffery did build some on the P14/M1917 type actions....

That rifle just screams "take me hunting."

Very nice.

Why not, the originals were built on standard length Mauser actions and they have been going strong for over 100 years. I'm gathering parts for a .404 build. I'm using a Lothar Walther barrel, Weibe 4MJ bottom metal and a Mauser action (my gunsmith is going to select the best candidate from 3 I own: 1909 Argy, 1950s FN commercial and a late 50s Weatherby).
