I spent the last two weekends in search of my early season buck and was surprised to see the number of blue grouse. Seems as though all the coveys are between 6 and 10 birds. They are still young but look heathly. It would have been easily to collect my four bird limit any of the six days I've been in the woods. I am not seeing much coyote sign although I did see where a grouse was killed.

I am not seeing adult birds and wonder if they are sitting on a second clutch of eggs. Does anyone know about grouse and the possibility of a second hatch?

very few grouse in these parts, so no answer to your question there...on the coyotes, though, we seem to be having an excess of them. i think their cycle is nearing a peak. dumped quite a few coons and skunks this summer; pheasants seem to appreciate that. just need to get after the 'yotes a little harder.
Hunting is not a matter of life or death. It is much more important than that.

Went out this holiday; and I must say that in unit 14 My sights were much different than yours. Last year the birds were leaking out of the grass every where I went. This year they are few and far between. The Spruce Grouse I saw were small in size and covey size. Got two Blues today, both out of small covey's. The Snowshoe's seem to be doing as good as last year though.
