Considering selling my 336 to fund a new Browning BLR in 358 Winchester. I figure the browning in 358 will do everything the marlin will and be better for the occasional long shot.

Anyway, before I try to sell the Marlin I'm wondering what the going rate would be for it. It's in great shape, metal is 90%+ and so is wood. Comes with a Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4x32 scope in Leupold rings, both in new condition. Rifle has a pistol grip, gold trigger and no safety.

I just paid $425 for one w/o a scope..

round these parts the gun is worth about 275-300 and the scope is another 75. i'd say between 350 and 400 is about right. but then again, 336's are a dime a dozen here in PA. i've bought similiar vintage guns within the past few years for as little as $200 from a private individual. shops are more obviously.

$300 to $500 depending on the part of the country you are in. Doesn't seem to make much difference if it has a scope or not unless it's something like a nice Leupold but then only about half the price of the scope.

Personally, I wouldn't trade off my 35 for two BLR's in 358. The Brownings are nice guns but I just don't like that big long receiver and the glossy finish on the wood but that's just me nit picking.

To be honest, the 35 rem velocity with the typical 200 grain round nose is around 2,080fps. The Hornady LE's are going about 2,200. The 358 will push the same 200 grain bullet about 2,500 to 2,600 fps. Quite a bit faster. My problem is, I prefer the controlled damage I get with the 35 Rem over the massive damage the 358 does to deer. And yes, I've seen the results of both on deer personally. The 358 would be more versatile reloaded because you can load it down to 35 rem velocity for close in hunting on deer or load it up for longer distance shooting on deer or for use on bigger game like elk. It can also handle tougher bullets and get proper expansion. The 35 rem needs a bullet that expands at lower velocity. The 358 IS a danged fine elk gun but I still like my 35 rem for my needs.

Sorry, the above post would be in regards to the JM stamped Marlins, not the REP guns from Remington. It is also for the standard RC (regular carbine) model with the 20" barrel and full length tube. If your gun does not have a full length tube, it is either an SC (sporting carbine, 20" barrel) or an "A" model which is the "rifle" length model with a 24" barrel. SC's and A's will bring more money than an RC in equal condition. Usually about $100 more. How old is your Marlin? If it was made about 2008 or earlier, it'll be a JM gun. If it has the cross bolt safety it's at least newer than 1984. If the top of the receiver has wavy lines on it, it's a "waffle top" and made before (I think)1954. The waffle tops bring better money if they are NOT drilled and tapped for a scope. If you post the first two digits of the s/n, I could tell you what year it was made if it's not a Remington gun.

It is definitely not a Remington. I don't have the serial number on me but I looked it up in the past and this one was built in the 70's. The no safety and gold trigger models were made from 1959-1982. Looks like I may not get the $500 I was hoping for so I'll just keep it or give it to a nephew.

By the way, if any of you see any 336 in that $300 range, please let me know as I've got a few nephews that could use a deer gun.

How far are you willing to travel to get one, or two? (Hint: Add your location to your profile) Local gun shop has 2 on the shelf right now under $300 and in decent shape.

Heck, might not have to travel at all. Most stores will ship if you want.

I picked one up in Oregon last year in like new condition for $400.

Or you could just get it re chambered to 356 Win.I have one done by Regan Nonneman and it is a significant gain over a 35 Rem.

Spent some time at a gun show in Oaks, PA this past weekend. Saw several 336's in 35 Rem. Best price I saw was one for $360. All the rest were $400-$450. Saw one where the dealer was asking $600. He told me the cheap Simmons scope and see through mounts were worth at least $200 and the stamped basket weave carry strap was worth another $100. I told him I'd give him $300 for the rifle and he could keep the scope, mounts and strap. He wouldn't take my offer. I wonder why?
