Do any of you experienced Coyote hunters have any thoughts about the Sierra HPBT .22 cal. 69 grain bullet for Coyotes in a .223? Velocity would be about 3000 fps. Thinking the weight and higher BC would give a little more range and buck wind better. Might be a little hard on pelts. Looking for a 300 yard capable bullet in the .223.

My only fear would be consistent expansion at longer ranges, esp. at .223 velocities. Now I would certainly bow out if someone with more experience with that bullet says it does fine, I have very limited experience with it.

Having shot a ton of them in 223, they penetrate hard items WAY better than one would think.

Remember its a ballistic HP, not a varmint HP.

That being said we've shot a lot of pigs and deer with them over the years.

If anything the performance is around standard cup and core performance usually more so than any other. They are not totally reliable though, the tips are not that large and can clog at times, at least thats what I've read.

That being said my go to pig/yote round is 75 bthps in 223.

If I wanted to make quick one shot stops all the time I"d be thinking 60 Vmax.

I have 65 gr Gameking bullets loaded over 25.5 gr of Varget. They shoot same poi and dang close in accuracy of the 69 MK. Have not connected with coyote flesh, yet, but I think it will have more reliable expansion than the match hollowpoint.

Thanks for the info. Regarding the 75 grainers, there is obviously a trade-off in lower velocity. Are you finding that notwithstanding that trade-off, that the 75 grainers give you a flatter trajectory and less wind drift? I guess what I am asking is if the higher BC is a better trade-off than velocity at ranges past 300 yards.

I took this Coyote at around 30 yards came into Pup in Distress . AR with 16 inch barrel and the Sierra 69 gr BTHP and Tac. Ran about 30 yards down hill and piled up , center chest shot looking at the caller. Trijicon Reflex sight .

Rob, 75s drift less in the wind at 300. Thats my biggest deal.

I can compensate for distance easily, and I can favor quickly for the wind, but I generally know what is where distnace wise before I call... and I know where to hold for what shots. Its the wind that takes more work, and as such thats what I protect against.

Just how I look at it.

I'd not be afraid to use any match bullet on a yote, but I also don't care if I loose one IE can't find it.

Were I fur consicous I'd probably be thinking big time about 62 or 55 barnes x.... caliber in, not much larger out almost always....

If I were trying for the caliber in nothing out, not sure that 223 would be my choice.

Never Used The Sierra, But Have Used The 68 Hornady Bthp With.Success. Nice 1" EXits, Blood Trail A Blind Man Could Follow, But No DRT's.

Rob: I haven't used the Sierra either, but the Hornady 68 BTHP is my load for longer range and windy days. Makes a difference for sure.
Rost had a great suggestion with the 60 gr Vmax�.a REAL good shooter and good 'compromise' bullet...

I have shot a lot of sierra matchkings on deer and coyotes in a .222. They are very accurate but they DO NOT OPEN UP. They are much like FMJs. Have shot several deer and coyotes where the exit hole was no bigger than the entry hole. Went to the 55 gr gameking hp. It opens up very well, and is almost as accurate. Know a guy who had the same results with matchkings in the .308.

What twist for the 68-69 grainers (Hornady and Sierrs, respectively)?

probably 1-8 or 1-9, shot placement is more important than the loads discussed here, I have shot (drt) coyotes out to 90yds with .22 lr...

I have killed two with 69gr mk's, both DRT, 150 and 180+yds.

My Ar Is 1/8", It shoots Them Very well.

Not bullet specific..... Sierra is too proud of it's bullets, Hornady preferred for that reason alone.

Rob- I've been using them for a short while now in one of the 16.5" Remington M700 in .223 with a suppressor. My concern was impact speed. I ended up using 28.5 gr of MR2000 with the bullet seated out to contact the lands. No pressure signs, great accuracy, and just shy of 2950 fps. I've only shot 3 coyotes with it so far ( all in the 100 to 200 yard range ) but all have been DRT. No runners. So far, I am happy with them.

1-8 is fine They kill very well. That's all I use for yote's. Would not use them on anything bigger. They fragment violently.
