I just bought a Ruger RSI in .243. I really went to buy a Remington 600 in .222 but loved the Ruger which was for sale for a good price. I'm more of a 218 Bee or .222 type of person, but thought there may be times I'd appreciate the potency of the.243.
What I want is a SAFE reload for the .243 for smaller varmints and turkey. I want reduced velocity and report. I don't want to experience SEE or detonation. So, what is a good high volume powder, slow burning, that will fill the case enough to prevent problems. I'm using light 60 grain bullets. I've reloaded for 30 years, but have never ventured into the lighter than published loads. I do have 4350. Powder, but don't mind buyinG one that is better recommended.
Thanks for any good advice, Mike

SR 4759... 15 to 25 grains...
4198 ( either ) 20 to 30 grains
RL 7 25 to 30 grains...
no filler needed.... Large rifle primer of your choice...
for light shooting loads... between 55 to 85 grain bullets especially, and each are superbly accurate...
lots more choices in a good cast bullet manual... I refer to Lyman's Myself...

I've used 26 grs of IMR 4198 with the 60 gr Sierra hp, the 75 gr Sierra hp, the 85 gr Sierra hpbt and also the old Speer 90 gr FMJ. I haven't chrono'd it but with the 75 Sierra hp it usually gave me less than 1" at 100 yds and I estimate it's around 2600 fps.

MB, Have loaded a lot of gopher loads for my son to use in his Mod. 7 in 243. Used any 75/80 gr bullet and the lowest 4198 (used either one)load that the Speer book recommended. Loaded/fired several hundred of them, worked great.-Muddy

You passed up a mod 600 in .222 for a Ruger in 243? You need to see a doctor!

Yeah, sometimes I would agree. I had the Remington 600 in my hands to pay for it, but it seems the price had jumped $100 from when I first looked at it, and the safety was not functioning properly, though I was assured this was a simple fix. While milling this around I saw the Ruger for a very decent price, and I love mannlicher stocks. I have a Tikka 12ga/.222, so I thought I'd give the .243 a try. Once in a while ,I kick myself for not taking the Remington.

Try 12-14 grains of Blue Dot with 55-58 grain bullets and don't worry about filling the case. It really works great.
