Saw pics of the FP. Kinda like it being centered and not hanging off to the side. Will try to find one.
Got a gunshow scrounger guy, will tell him to keep an eye out.

Welcome to the Forum. We're a bunch of enablers here. Be careful or that neat old EG may be the first of many Savage lever actions. David

I remember reading Savage catalogs in jr high, during my algebra class. Kinda liked the 99 back then smile

Must say I do think the .300 Savage a darn fine looking little round. Like .35 Rem too.

.308 win doesn't do anything for me.

Well I shot the thing.
Fair amount of blast from 24" bbl..........but man is .300 Savage comfy. I dunno what bullet weight, proly 150's.
Buddy found some old factory RP stuff, so I just let er rip with those.

Couple of things.

Mag spring is very wimpy and cartridge counter didn't index right.

It cycled fine though.

Rear sight/front sight...........I'll need a sunny day and a moron deer..........to give me enough light/time to line those damn things up.

Rear is all the way down (one notch on elevator) and it's right height at 25, but 2" left. Will tap it over........if I don't find a Willaims FP.

Trigger is pretty heavy.

This rig will need some fixin to stay in my safe. As it is right now........dunno. I will shoot a deer with it, just to say I did.

Lightfoot makes a scope base which requires no new holes, uses the tang holes and the rear sight slot. Just a thought to keep in mind if you want to hunt that gun and use modern optics. The 300 Savage is a great cartridge for white tails.

Looks very good.
Has me wondering about an old fixed low power Weaver.
I do have a Redfield Rev 2-7X sitting on the shelf, but think it wouldn't look right.

Greetings every one. I am brand new to this site; so please forgive me if I violate any rules or seem rude. I signed up because I have a question about a newely aquired Savage lever action .30-30. I know it is old, just how old I dont know. I was my grandfather's step brothers. A number is visible on the underside that is easily read. It is 1777XX. Can any of you experts tell me what the year of manufacture is on this old lever action. It does have a crack in the stock and I was wondering about replacing the stock with a new one. Thank you for your time and patience.

MP, welcome to the site. If it's just a crack with no wood missing hold off on restocking. Get some pics up so the guys can see it. There have been stocks snapped in half that have been repaired, and if you didn't know it, it's hard to find the repair, Joe.

...that serial number should hit 1915 for production year.

Depending on how bad the crack is, a good stock repair guy can probably fix it.

Thank you guys for the information. I will try to get a few pictures taken. Being that it is that old, I will not likely be changing the stock if is still OK.

Well, I have some very good pictures of the crack in the 1899 stock. Unfotunately they are too large to upload here. I have to figure out what to do to make them smaller or find a way to add a link to get to them.

Since I am a new member I will add my collection to the list:

1895 in .303 Savage, 24" oct barrel, S/N 34xx

1899C in .30-30 with rifle butt plate, Lyman No. 1, S/N 31xxx,

1899A Saddle gun takedown in .303 Sav, S/N 210xxx

99G Deluxe takedown in .303 with deluxe "K" style checkering, Lyman 30 1/2, S/N 307xxx

Post war 99 EG in 300 Sav, S/N 527xxx with Redfield 70LH - my grandpa's rifle gifted to me 20 years ago that started my interest in gun collecting in general and Savages in particular.

All are great shooters, I have taken a few deer with them but don't use them as much for rough country hunts.

I have a guide friend here on Kodiak who returned two days ago from a successful solo winter goat hunt. He was packing one of his old M-99 30-30 carbines with half octagon/hald round bbl and was able to get within 140 yards and dropped it with a single shot.
