Those 99R's with the heavy forearms have a reputation for accuracy. Congrats!

Hi Calhoun, Today I was reading an old thread of yours from 7/21/17 about your "Happy Dance", for finding a 50's 99RS. In it, you mentioned the case colored rotors and also the possibility of case colored mounting screws for the Redfield 70LH sight. While packing my 99R tonight in preparation for my trip to deer camp this Tuesday, I decided to give it a good looking over once more. While the rifle was made in 1950, and the rotor is definitely brass, the sight mounting screws do not look to be typically blued. The rear one seems about 1/2 blue and 1/2 brassy yellow, the same color as the case color on the lever. The front one seems to be about all brassy yellow. Now, would Savage blue the screws in house to match the blueing they use on the rest of the gun? Or, would they use them, as is, from Redfield?

Also, earlier in this thread you mentioned that 99RS's were cataloged with Lyman front sights. Previously, when I looked, I saw no markings on it. Now, when I put a flash light on it, sure enough, it's stamped Lyman. So now, I have a front sight and a rear sight filler that both say Lyman. I also looked very closely with a magnifier and there is absolutely no, none, zero scratches or other evidence of a rear sight ever being present or removed. The filler is also pristine. No tool marks of any kind.

I know that some collector/seller/traders might add and swap parts to make an RS out of an R, but they would do that in the hopes of increased sale price, no? Yet this gun had a start bid of just $399. That tells me that the seller was not trying to pass it as an RS. Also, if it was sold to him as an RS by a previous owner, he would have paid much more, and so, would have had to resell for much more.

I'd be very curious as to your thoughts and the rest of the knowledgeable members on the forum.

I think the Lyman front sight seals the deal. To me it would also follow that a Lyman blank would be used.

I think you have an honest gun that no one bothered to ID previously. Enjoy it!

I'd say it's quite likely a 99RS. They do exist, they catalogued them for the entire 50's. Yours has all the signs of one. Be nice to get some good pictures of it when you get the time, the more we document and compare the more we learn.

And very interesting to find out they case colored the tang screws on yours without the rotor being case colored. Wasn't sure if they were only doing that at that same time or not. Another data point is always good.

Gents, I have a very nice 99R (1939 I think) manufacture. IT is drilled and tapped for a scope and it also came with an old Leupold 4x that eventually failed. Sent it back to Leupold and they just sent me a brand new FXII 4X. Guess I;ll have to live with it, but my question is this: The rifle is very accurate and I plan to take it hunting, but it does not have sling studs. Would it be blasphemy to have them installed and if not, are there "period correct" studs out there? jorge

Blasphemy!! grin

I'd look for a stud-less sling. I have one made for muzzleloaders I keep around. Those prewar 99R's are great guns.

Some options here. I think he's a campfire member also, or used to be.

A few weeks ago I picked up a 1929 99G take down in 250-3000. It has a Stith scope mount and Weaver K4 scope. It has the lever lock and brass round counter. The shop it was sold to knows the guy it came from thinks it was a one family gun originally bought by his father or grandfather. He is going to reach out to try and get me all the history he can on it.

There is an Images forum down at the bottom of the forums. You can upload full sized pictures there and then give us a link to them. Easiest way to do it.

I like it! I'm not a fan of scoped rifles, but that just looks "right".

With that scope on there, do you suppose it's ever been taken down?

I took it apart as far as I could and cleaned it last weekend. The original owner kept her clean. Other than dust she was very clean. Under the forearm it is stamped OPEN and has an arrow for direction but damned if I could get it to move. I was expecting copper fouling but the bore looks pristine. The fine crosshair scope is very clear for it's age. The scope and mount were made in the 30's or 40's best I can figure. I bought Remington brass and Speer 87 gr Hot Core bullets to stay true to the 250-3000's original design. Plus this rifle is a 1:14 twist which can be iffy with 100 gr ammo. From what I've read the Hot Core's work well on deer. There is also a varmint 87 gr version that is not good for deer.

Unless you took the scope off it won't come apart. The scope is holding the barrel to the receiver. Even with the scope off it may not come apart. Don't try to force it.

Nice looking rifle. I'm lucky my 250 R shoots the 100 gr Rems well. I have 5 250's now, so I bought 3 boxes of the 87's thinking I'll make one of them a designated 87 rifle, some day? Welcome to the club.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

That is a very nice rifle.

I would have bought that one...
