Question for the cerakote masters of the universe, Cerakote has a "CLEAR" coating that made me ponder the question;
Can cerakote be applied to a blued barrel or must the barrel be stripped to the bare naked steel?
If it can be applied to a blued finish, will the clear cerakote allow the rich blued under finish to shine through?

The Cerakote color you want is "Midnight Blue". It is the closest thing to a blued steel finish.

Post the info on the Clear when you get more info.
Most installers bead blast the metal first so the coating has the best bond to the metal

I'm telling you- try Dyna-Gun Shield. Once applied, you can't even see that it's there...

10/4, went that route on my first build and it's as close to bluing as cerakote can come but it's still not the deep luster bluing look.

Bumped this for some info...
So can a blued steel be cerakoted without being bead blasted? And if it has to be bead blasted, does the blasting remove all the blueing? And if it removes all the blueing, is the cerakote that much better than the blueing that was blasted off??
Thanks

The only thing that is going to achieve that is real bluing. Cerakote is a nice product but it's still just a high tech paint.

Thanks Bead/sand blasting gives it surface texture for the Cerakote to stick to. If you spray it on a shiny blued rifle it won't stick. You don't have to to get 100% of the bluing off but the bluing that's left will offer no protection to the firearm. As far as protection goes. Yes, I would think that Cerakote protects metal better than bluing. That said, bluing has been around and protecting firearms for hundreds of years. You can get by without Cerakote if you don't like it.
