Hello Savage collectors,

as far as I know, the weaver style top mount bases #14 and #19 fit perfect to the Savage 99.
But they are regularly made of Aluminium.
I would prefere the same bases made of Steel.
Unfortunately I couldn't find anything like that on the Web.

Does anybody here know, if there is a manufacturer for #14 and #19 weaver style bases made of steel.

I have Leupold QRW rings on my scope.

Many thanks in advance and
best regards from Germany

Pasche

I use the pivot mount Weavers on several rifles, including a 358, and have zero problems, I love em.
Seems like i remember seeing something similar on eBay in Redfield, but I could be off base. Might pay to do some searching.

Have never seen the true Weaver style bases in steel.

REdfield used to make a 2 piece steel base but it uses the Redfield turn-in ring set. They are quite expensive if you find a set. There is a Redfield 2 piece set in their Frontier model which used oddball rings and is usually aluminum too. Don't buy that one by mistake.

I agree with Lightfoot.

Nice group of 99's you have listed. Thanks for posting. It's good to hear from members from other parts of the world. smile

Many thanks for your answers and advices! :-)
So I think, I will try to get the original Weaver bases made of aluminium.

My gunsmith doesn't like fixing scopes with adapters made of aluminium. But I'm not going to take the scope off the gun very often - so I think it will work. :-)

Best regards from Germany

Warne makes a Maxima series two piece steel base set for Weaver type rings but I don't see the 99 on their chart. You might contact them to see if they could do something for the 99. I have a set for my FN Mauser. Regards, Bruce

Typically Weaver just adds an "S" to the end of the aluminum base number for their steel counterparts, but it doesn't appear they offer the 14 or 19 in steel.

Nothing wrong with aluminum bases - people have been using them for over half a century now. The clamping force of the rings onto them is far from being enough to damage them, and the mounting screws holding them to the rifle are the same ones that would be used with steel bases so the odds of them ever sheering due to recoil is miniscule at best - especially on a 99 given the cartridges it was offered in.

As long as there's still lead in the air, there's still hope!
