Just purchased a Ruger MK II Compact in .223, that will be the donor rifle for a 6x45 build.

.243 is the smallest dia that I can hunt big game with , so with this in mind I'm going to build a walking around varminter/deer rifle.

20" barrel with a heavier contour then the factory barrel , twisted for 85 gr and less bullet weights.

Ideas ?

Cup/Core or mono? My 12" ROT 6TCU 21" shot 85 BTHP, but I'd NEVER build another that slow. Why handicap yourself, or a future owner? NO downside to go 8"......

Both of my 6x45's and my 6x47 are 8's and all shoot great. We are using TTSX 80's for the kids for deer this weekend - it shoots the 65 vmax to the same point of aim and they drop about the same as the ttsx at 200. Haven't tried anything heavier, but an 8 should stabilize them all.

9.5 works in my 6x45 up to and including 85 Partitions.

But if doing it over, I'd go 8.

A 9 wouldn't suck, but there's no reason to not do an 8 as it doesn't cost more.

Mine shoots 55's just fine and I don't think one is going much lighter than that in the 6mm.

I have a 1:12 6X47 Rem, the next one will be 1:8. Better to have more than you need than not enough twist.

I went 1:9, shoulda gone 1:8. If the stars align, 90 Scenars might work. Wish Barnes would do a 60-65gr. TTSX. I got 80 TTSX to 2,768 fps. Would love a TTSX of sorts at 3,000.

Well the donor showed up in the mail today. Very Good to excellent condition. Will try and shot it next week. New barrel will be a 8 twist

The 6X45 does not really have enough gas for heavy bullets.
I would stick with a 12" twist for 85 grain max bullets.

If 85 grains is not enough you will need a 6mm Rem.

Have a 6X47 and a max load for a 75 grn bullets is 24 grn of 4198. Not very fast but extremely accurate in my 40XBR.

That's silly. There is NOTHING to gain by doing a 1-12" twist, only downsides.

1-8 is the only way to go, all upside and no downside!!

Went with a 1-9" twist with my 6x47 Rem. The 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip shoots great, just as accurate as any of the lighter weights.

Never planned on going with anything heavier than 90-95 grains.


Speed kills. and I don't have any long range shots that would benefit me by going with a higher BC bullet such as the 105 gr. A-max. The balance of good velocity with a decent ballistic coefficient is more important to me in the smaller cartridges.

Great recovery. That 95 BT is a sleeper in the 6mm class bullets.

70gr Ballistic tip works in the 6x45, so I've heard.
