My problem was the 4200s (and 3200s), went below 'safe' er lengths at the higher range. Could I adapt? Probably, but its not good for my teenager, training prone on a 308, to have to get bit OR climb up and down a stock with cheek pos, just to get er, when it varies over an inch, between power ranges. Note that we're talking 'advertised' er vs measured/real er. I think Bushnell inflates, a lot.

As eluded to previously the ZV line by Minox is their entry level scope and is quite different from the ZA line that has been discontinued. Back when the ZA line was offered I was in the market for a scope and looked at both the ZA and 4200 in 3-9x40. I ended up with the Minox due to the eye relief and it has been a very good scope for me. I have owned a lot of scopes from that size and general price point (Zeiss Conquest, Docter, Meopta Meopro, Leupold VX3, Nikon Monarch, Burris Signature and likely some I'm forgetting. Add the 4200 into that list and you are basically at a toss up unless ounces or a fraction of an inch are a deal breaker for you. None will likely ever be the difference in success or not (Bushnell Rainguard not withstanding). The ZV3 line from Minox will be bringing up the rear to all of the scope previously listed and it as priced as such.

I think that the only Bushnell Elite that doesn't inflate their ER figures is the 3-9. A member here, who is an optical engineer, tested a 3-9 and he found that the ER was actually 3 1/2 inches instead of the standard 3.3 inches listed for all other Elites. I know that's not a lot, but he also said that he felt they also had a good "eye box" as well. In all honesty I think that the 2.5-10's would work fine on most anything of a non-magnum or fly weight rifle design. I did however recently buy a Leica ER 2.5-10 for my 300 WM for two reasons. One, I wanted to try one of these super euro's and two, I got a great deal on it.

I also agree with you completely about having your teenager starting off with what could be a very bad experience. I've gotten bit by a 1.75-6 Leupold when it was mounted on my slug gun and also when I mounted it on my Knight ML.

Which is another head scratcher for perspectives. The bushy 3-9 I used was the only NOT 4200...but a 3200. It had a measured (+/-) 1.75" @9x....not fun on a short, light .358W. On the other hand, the Leupy VX3 1.75-6 has had plenty of ER and a good eye box....to me.;) The ZA5HD 1.5-6? If you're even in the same room with it, you can see through it. smile

NOBODY has more eye relief than Leupolds. That is their main redeeming feature.

As far as the Minox. A bunch of my buddies bought them as they seemed to be a good price point for a bright bigger scope. They are all ZA5s. Optically they are sharp and nice to shoot through. The adjustments on them look like they came off a $29 pellet gun scope. Internally, they are not very robust. Several have broken. Thank goodness these guys don't shoot 10 rounds a year and Minox has a good warranty.

Actually the Bushnell Elite 1.25-8 has the most ER of any scope I can think of outside of a scout scope. Not sure if it's still in production but it had a listed ER of 6 inches. IMO, they should of increased the size of the objective to say 36mm instead of 32mm but I guess they intended for it to be used as a dangerous game rifle scope, hence the smaller sized objective lense.

As a product line, Leupolds have the most eye relief. There are a few here and there but not across the board.

No question about that. I think that the 6500 series pretty much all of them have 4 inches of ER but they are on the heavy side compared to most Leupold's and light weight has been one of Leupold's biggest selling points. I was actually going to put a Elite 6500 2.5-16x42 on my 300 Win Mag but I got a great deal on the Leica ER so I thought, WTF, lets see what all the fuss is about. I know that John Barsness tested one and reported about it in one of his RLN issues. According to John there were no issues regarding tracking and, IIRC, he mounted it on one of his scope breaking light weights. It's no fly weight scope by any means, but it is on the lighter side of comparable scopes and for me, it had more positive features than negative ones.
