Anyone have any first hand experience with the new Pressure Trace II system? Very nearly pulled the trigger on one today, but thought I'd ask here for any info first.
For the money involved it seems like a must have...
Thanks.

I'd look at the thread : RSI Pressure Trace and Chrony from July '06 for some extended discussion with the usual suspects including especially from Mr. Oehler.
Fr Frog, noted Scout fan, has an extended writeup on his own experience
Notice for the money involved must factor in the repeated cost of strain gauges although a given wire can be left on the same rifle for an extended period. For some it may still be a no brainer. Later innovations such as predicting preferred exit points - barrel harmonics - joined with the current interest in barrel tuners might for all I know make the RSI gear a necessity for accuracy shooters.

I have one. It works. If you're loading for something a little offbeat, like a wildcat or 7x57 or 7.62x54R they are extremely helpful. They are also helpful if you have the curiosity gene and want to do basic experiments. If you're loading for your 30-06, there are plenty of good loads available already, and you're not likely to do much better. From all the evidence I can find, the piezo and strain gauge methods of measuring chamber pressure are practically interchangeable as far a quality of results go, and both are much superior to the old CUP method. If you're going to do serious pressure measurements, you do need to control the temperature of the firearm. I strap a thermocouple to my barrel, just forward of the receiver. This may help.
Be not weary in well doing.

Denton,
Exactly the info I was looking for. My interest is mostly from that "curiosity gene" you mentioned...a strong desire to experiment and expand my level of knowledge. The Youtube video was great. Thanks for the info!

I know this topic is almost a year old but I'd like to see more. I have been talking to Jim and am looking forward to getting the test system. Problem is I don't see much for the 44-40. I am building a test stand rather than using a rifle. Once I get situated I do plan on getting the test system.

Doh. The thread is five years old but not my reply. Not sure what happened to the videos though....I see them as working. Sometimes when I create a post and have a question, I am scolded and told to search...then when I search and reply, I get scolded for replying to an old thread....it's a lose lose no matter what :-) I did get some results from my Pressuretrace II. May or may not be accurate but here is what I have so far.

I bought PT2 when I was hand loading 400 grain woodies to 2100 fps in my Miroku 1895 .405 for a Cape Buff hunt. in 2012.
In addition to my hand loads. I traced Hornady factory .405, 300 grain loads and some other loads.
The traces show which powders have smooth rise and fall and which ones have dramatic peaks. These tests proved for me what one mentor had told me years back - that VV N133 peak pressure will run 10000 to 12000 psi less than most powders at the same upper velocities.
Because of this I use N133 in my .405 and .45-70 double rifles to get good velocity at lower pressures.
PT2 works.
