Anyone ever loaded for a bolt action 35 Remington. I got one in a trade. Its a Interarms Mark X. Good strong actions should allow a little hotter load. I could also make it a Whelen very quickly. I would like to try a Sierra 225gr Spitzer Gameking at about 2250-2450 fps. It has a 24" barrel. Any suggestions as to load max capability appreciated. It will be used in the heavy woods for 100 yard max shooting of Whitetails.

i figure i'arms never made a short action mauser, so why not whelenize to take advantage of all that receiver/mag space?

We are on the same page. I think the solution may be reaming . I would like to see if anyone has loaded for the heavier bullets in the 35 rem bolts.

You could even go the 358 Winchester route.

if you are only shooting 100yds max you already have the best 35 caliber cartridge for that. otherwise you will be beating yourself to death for nothing.. try it you will like it.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

You run out of case capacity.....

If all you are going to shoot is 100 yards, the off-the-shelf 200gr. Cor-Lokt is pretty devastating. In fact, zero 2 inches high at 100, dead on at 150, and a few low at 175.... a little flatter than most people would suggest.

Cast bullets in the 180-200gr. range work great. A case full of Varget does a fine job....

I have a model 7 in 35 rem with a 21 inch Hart barrel. I love "35's" and this little rifle is an outstanding woods deer/boar rifle. Your load ( a 225gr at 2250-2450 ) would be TOO HOT! Those speeds(around the 2250 range) are possible with 200gr bullets but not with 225gr'ers in a 35 Rem. Also, COL does not permit using the loooong boattail 225 gr bullets in most short action 35 Rem( I realize mag space is adaquate in your mauser, but I bet you'd still have to seat that 225 too deep!)You are talking 358 Win loads and you just can't do it ( safely)from a 35 rem case. Just a note, factory 35 rem 200gr loads run 1950 to 2000 fps from my 21" barrel. Re -7 , 3031, and AA Br2015 are excellent powders for 200gr loads.

We use a 200gr Sierra RN and 39.0 gr. of Accurate 2520 with spectacular results in our old Marlin /
Glenfield Model 30. Not quite the speed and designated weight you "wished" for but more than adequate for Deer, Black Bear, and Moose at less than 100 yards. Probably would do in a pinch fer Elk or a bigger bear if called upon, but for those ya probably ought ta use more gun and it won't be my first pick.

Would it be safe to say that these suggested loads would work out of a Remington 7600 also?

Not exactly what you're after, but Buffalo Bore loads a 220gr jacketed flatnose at 2200fps. They state that the 2200fps is out of a Marlin carbine with an 18.5" barrel, though, so your velocity should be a little higher.

I think Buffalo Bore's loads are about maximum ... that's their whole marketing 'niche'. I don't know what sort of powders they use, or whether you could safely come very close to them by reloading. Just throwing that 'factory' load data out there (put the 'factory' in quotes since they're such a small operation).

A friend of mine once built a 35 Remington on an Italian Carcano action (Iknow. It seemed strange to me too!) As I recall, he was loading 200s at about the 2400fps level with no problems. While not nearly as strong as a mauser, the Carcano is better than one might think. This one had been a 6.5 sporter and was nothing if not unique.
The 760 Remington is, of course, quite strong. After all, they digest 270 Winchester loads which are generally plenty hot. There would be no reason a 35 Rem couldn't be loaded to the same pressure levels in such a rifle. Still, it makes more sense to make it a 358 winchester. That way, hot loads would be less likely to find their way into a Marlin or an older .35. GD

As mentioned the 35 Remington case is on the small side.
In my 760 I load 200 gr bullets with 40 gr of 3031. Velocity is
around 2350 and accurate. This is a compressed load, pressure calculates to around 42 kpsi. Reloader 7 could be a better powder, but I haven't tried it.

Thanks Guys !!! I think I will try the loads you gave and see what they do in the 24" barrel over the Chrony. I appreciate the input.

CONTENDER Super 14 in barrel

I am not sure the case is really meant for higher pressure loads. Seems it may be limiting factor in any of the modern actions mentioned above ( excluding my Contender perhaps)

Sorry, no pressure tested loads from me, but both QuickLoad and the Powley Computer suggest that a 225 gn spitzer at 2250 fps from 24" is getting to be pretty hot, on the order of 50,000 CUP / 60,000 psi. Surely 2450 fps will be out of reach.

Can't help with load data for the .35 Rem, but wanted to comment on the 225 Sierra.
My brother recovered one that had passed through a deer's shoulder and down into the ground. It was shot from a .358 Win, and was about 30 feet from the muzzle, so impact velocity would have been over what you'ld be able to achieve with the .35.
The bullet never expanded, and looked like a banana.
This is a sample of one, but enough for him not to use them in the .358 again. All of them I hit deer with out of a .35 Whelen appeared to have expanded very well though.
FWIW, I'd stick to 200 grainers if I was loading for a .35 Rem. (or the 220 Speer).

rvp, been there, done that! I have an old Rem M600 with a 4 digit serial # (and a plastic vented rib) in 35 Rem. I knew the action was strong enuf for higher pressure loads and set about finding some. I actually ran across an article written by a well known gun writer that had some hotter than SAAMI loads just for this type rifle so I tried them. They worked quite well, but in the long run, I decided they really didn't add much to what the ole 35 Rem already was, so I stopped using them.

It's hard to beat this round for normal woods ranges. I shot a six point at the top of the brisket while he was looking dead at me. I found the perfectly expanded slug under the skin of his hindquarter . The bullet penetrated about 30" of whitetail and killed him very dead, very quickly. This was with a std pressure load.

I thought of reaming this litttle rifle to 358 Win and just couldn't stand the thought of changing it. It is extremely accurate and about the handiest thing I own for slipping through the woods with.

We have some property lines here that aren't all that friendly, so putting them down quick and keeping him from being stolen when he runs the wrong way is a must. we have some real big BOYS walking around.
