friend gave me 2 full boxes of these vintage Remington / UMC .257's, 100gr "Roberts Mush" .....relatively short for weight, with sizable HP.

Gonna load these in an old .250/3000 with 1-14" twist and see how they stabilize....then go shoot deer & pigs and all sorts of stuff.

wonder what sorta date might be attached to these?

also have a few other boxes of Remington bullets with handwritten labels on them, red box as i recall, and some 32/20's at home....will get pix of those.

anyone ever played with oldtimers like these before?

I have several of those boxes, most empty but have some with bullets in them. The only ones I have are 150 FMJ for 30/06 and an empty .311 for .303 British. I was told they are from the 30's or the 40's but don't know for sure. I also have a partial of Frankfurt Arsenal Match 30 cal, a partial of Western .30 220 HPRN that Elmer Keith wrote about, and the oddest of the lot a partial box of P.O. Ackley controlled expansion bullets in 150gr .30 cal. The things you accumulate when you collect antique ammo boxes and reloading pariphenalia.

I sold those here on the forums. Got them from the widow of a deceased rifle looney that used them in a 250 Savage and 25-06AI. Not sure how old they are, but I wanted to keep some of them. Ended up selling them all along with some 117 grainers to your buddy. I'd like to know how they shoot as well.

I also got these.

I've got some Rem factory loaded .30-30 ammo loaded with the same type of hollow point bullets. I can't remember if they are 150 or 170gr. IIRC, Dad said he was pretty sure that ammo was from around '36 to '38.

'Tis a small world indeed....in addition to the 1-14 twist model 70, some of these are also going to launched out of a .250savage which i think i bought from you about a year or so ago....

Model 7, pacnor barrel......it was in a CDL stock at the time...

Dang! Yes. That was mine. I, too, would love to know how it shoots those bullets. I was going to try them in a 257 Rbts and a 250 Savage. Should be very good bullets for whitetail.

Luckily, the guy was a 25-caliber slut. I did get some other bullets that I'll keep and shoot. He had a Pre-64 Model 70 in 257 Roberts that had been rechambered to 25-06AI. Ugh! That's about a $2K mistake. I got that rifle, too....and Redneck is getting it and a 35-cal barrel next week to make me a 35 Whelen.

He also had a very early Ruger No. 1 in 25-06 LNIB that I sold on Gunbroker for over $3 Grand!

Here's a pic of the 117's and another pic of the group your 100's came out of.

I remember when Schitt was just old. Now things are 'vintage'. And 'gay' used to equate to 'happy'. Now it equates to 'vintage'.

FyrepowrX & 257heaven-

A comment on dates of the Remington bullets:

Remington introduced the .257 Roberts in 1935. In an article about this in the January 1935 issue of The American Rifleman, Ned Roberts wrote:

[Remington] deemed it advisable to design new 87, 100, and 117-grain open-point bullets, all with the same shape of points so that barrels could be correctly throated to handle all three of these bullets. This was necessary because the regular 87, 100, and 117-grain bullets had different profiles and differently shaped points. In order to distinguish these new .25-caliber bullets from the others, the new ones are called the "Remington .25-caliber Roberts Mushroom Bullets".

Initially introduced as the .25 Remington Roberts, the name of the cartridge was very quickly changed to .257 Remington Roberts. "C.L." on the packages probably indicates these are Core-Lokt bullets; the core-locking feature was introduced about 1939. So, at least some of your bullets were made later than this. Remington produced few hunting bullets from 1942-1945, and I think their packaging changed post-WWII, with DuPont trademarks added.

I'd like to learn if my dating is incorrect in any way.

It might be fun to save a few of these bullets for making longitudinal sections to see how they were constructed.
