No, HIS "proof" is hunting story hearsay on an internet forum

The bear is documented reality:

Hunter bags second largest bear killed in North Carolina
FOX 8 4 days ago
The animal is the second largest bear bagged in North Carolina, behind an 880-pound bear killed in Craven County in 1998, Olfenbuttel said.

Even one that weighed 647 lbs was just the 17th largest taken in NC:

It took five years to do it, but the state of North Carolina finally confirmed Billy Walkowiaks 2004 black bear as the 17th largest North Carolina record black bear ever taken in NC.

Billys North Carolina record black bear had an official weight of 647 pounds and was estimated to be nine years, nine months old. The record bruin was shot on a dog hunt in Hyde County, NC, a hotbed for big bears in the state.

Like I said, we call a 500 lb bear a little one

During the 2003-2004 season, North Carolina produced 48 bears in excess of 500 pounds at the coast but only six bears weighing more than 500 pounds in the mountains.

Most bears are taken on spring hunts after they've been sleeping 5 months, they've got long hair but not much weight.

There are no Spring Bear seasons in NC

Like I said, didn't give a crap about his story, don't give a crap about yours. Never called him a liar, never called you one.
He does have a photo of an XTP without a jacket, does he not?

Seen enough XTP jackets at the berm and tested enough that didn't open up to continue to go poke anything else with them.
Might have even shot a few critters with them and seen a few come unglued at higher speed, then fail to open on another.
If an XTP core does not furl over the jacket edge on impact, it will separate. If the cavity does not get filled with enough of the right material or hit with sufficient speed, it won't always open. Are those anomaly's? No doubt. Are they 110% fail proof? Not in my experience.

I respect the fact some have also had great results with them.....are these results "internet stories" too?

I guess I didn't realize we were only discussing NC bears. We do have a spring season in most of the western US & our bears have long hair & not much weight so they are over rated as far as how much they weigh. Bu we do take an awful lot of bears in the western US. I guess I'll keep my opinions to myself until I get more experience.

A guy I used to interact with on another site had shot quite a number of bears with his .44 and swore by the Hornady 265 gr. FP.

I shot a B&C bear a few years ago with Cast Performance 325 gr bullets. He was shot twice at 10 paces in the front of the right shoulder, as he faced me. Both bullets were found against the hide at the back of the left hindquarter. Those bullets went lengthwise, diagonally, through over 5' of bear. When the Division of Wildlife checked him they estimated his live weight between 550 and 600 lbs.
Load was 22 gr. H110.
