When I got that PM, I never dreamed that I would end up with a rifle, much less one of such great beauty. I have mixed feelings about using it. Logic tells me it is a tool and needs to be used, but when I look at it, I am scared of marring it. I am compromising by only taking it when I think that it will not rain, and yes I know that it will stand getting wet. miles
Took the 9x57 that Ken Howell gave me bear hunting. Did not use it on a bear but,it will see more use. Hopefully I'll draw a elk tag next year and come rain or shine it's going! That is what it is made for USING!

Scratches, dings etc.. just adds more character to an already beautiful rifle. wink

Well stated, Ken, it is all about choices....always enjoy your perspective when you do post up.

The above highlighted statement so reminds me of my 95.5 year young WWII 'Battle Of The Bulge' survivor Father-In-Law. He ended up having five daughters after his first born son. We were having a discussion about some family "challenges" and he shared a gem of wisdom that I'll never forget. That gem was; " Sometimes you just have to bite your tongue!" .

In the recent Veterans Day tribute to him one of the things I wrote was this; "This man sets a fine example of tolerance when dealing with people that *think* they know more than someone who's lived 9.5 decades on the planet!! ".

I've been checking into this thread for a couple of days waiting for someone to give a detailed run down of the rifle.

I can see that it's a Mauser action,...is it built on a commercial or military action?

Nice furniture too, of course. What's the story on the stock?

I'd like to hear all about it.

That made me LOL here in the pre-dawn darkness, thanks grin

What a great way to look at life Ken. Congrats to Miles and apparently quite a few others here.

Now if you could just get to Shrap and Travis' level of generosity, what a wonderful world indeed.

One of my eternal regrets is that I don't have enough of anything to give something of value to every one of my friends many of whom I haven't even met yet.

well, if the truth be known, no matter if everyone wants to accept it or not, the friendship thing came a long long time before the part about something of value. I have been on the receiving end of both.
Ken can be kind of crusty at times, which gives him some of his charm. I don't think he has ever suffered fools easily. He has a very precise mindset in things, which is the reason he wrote that wonderful book on reforming brass, and the reason it turned out so well. It is the same type of mindset my grandson has, the air force engineer type.
My biggest problem which i have to overcome is taking the something of value out in the woods for fear of scratching it. I am working up to it. Without a doubt, Dr. Howell is a national treasure in the gun world, for just a whole bunch of reasons, and I have treasured the time i have had to spend with him. My regret in that area is he is hard of hearing and so am I, and we are about at the point of having to use sign language.
I think those of us that have gone up to quemato every year truly value the richness of the experience, it seems like it's better every year. And that, is the direct result of Howell. I am aware of quite a few things this man has done out of the goodness of his heart, with no thought of self benefit in mind. A few of the recipients have already posted on this thread, and know what i am talking about. He is a better man than I for sure.
And see, I learned a new word today, fecalneuric. I am going to use that.

This pretty much sums it up for me as well.

When I first met Ken, I had no expectations, no idea he had ever given anything to anyone or even would. That wasn't the reason I went to visit him and in fact the thought never even occurred to me. As far as I knew, he could have been a hoarder or clingy and afraid to get rid of anything, or selfish and mean, or simply one of those people who just rub you the wrong way, although I really didn't expect that, but some personalities simply clash for whatever reason. Or it could have been that he was one that simply didn't give anything away and that would have been OK by me. Not so in this case.

It seems to me most everything to Ken is just "stuff", albeit some of it pricy stuff, but still mostly just "stuff". Not stuff without value, but stuff where the monetary value is nowhere near the intangible and irreplaceable value of the friendship that comes when one knows the sentimental value of an item they've been given. To receive an item that meant a great deal to the giver makes that item more valuable to me. And that makes what I've been given not only by Ken, but all others all that much more valuable to me.

A couple of years ago, I bought some of the "stuff" that Ken brought to the Quemado gathering to dispose of: a pristine 12X Redfield AO rifle scope with target turrets, five boxes of Federal Premium .22-250 ammo and a new Brownells latigo sling. The agreed upon price was a little south of $300. As soon as I got home, I bought a USPS money order for the agreed upon amount and mailed it to Ken. A couple of days later he PM'ed me, thanking me for sending the funds. As an aside, he noted that he had already endorsed the money order and mailed it to another Campfire member who was in need of financial assistance at the time. Classic (and classy) Ken!

Indeed, outstanding generosity as an innate character trait runs rampant among la crme de la crme of the Campfire and Miles is certainly one of those crmes.

I had the pleasure of being around a lot of the Campfire members that showed up at the Quemado GetTogether this past August...

Ken couldn't make it out, but a lot of us went into town to visit him...

What a wonderful couple of days it was to be down there with ALL the people I got to meet...for the first time or once again after attending the GetTogether at Roosevelt Lake in Arizona previously...

I tell ya, I don't think I've ever had the opportunity to spend a weekend that I was around more of very generous down to earth people than I have experienced at the Campfire GetTogethers I have had the pleasure and opportunity to attend...

2 days and 1200 miles down there, but it sure was well worth the trip...
