For reasons I can't explain, I feel the need for a 7 1/2 inch .45 LC 1st Gen Colt SAA. I don't feel the need badly enough to spend three or four grand on an old Colt with worn out innards, as I want to shoot it. From what I read the Cimarron clones by Umberti are the cream of the current crop....does that square with the experience of the cowboy shooters here?

I just bought a "Sheriff's Model" with 3.5" bbl, and it really is a cut above the other Uberti revolvers I looked at. Case hardened frame, blued bbl and cylinder, and fire blued screws, with checkered wood grips.

Cimarron has stopped honing the triggers to a hair, and now have a crisp 3-lb pull. The older Cimarrons really made you obey the CAS rule that you don't cock until you are pointed down range!

Cimarron doesn't guarantee the pistol to be regulated to shoot where the sights point, but mine does. I think I probably need a pair.

I am not an expert on any of this by any means, but before you buy anything take a look at U.S.F.A. they have the "Rodeo" and the "Gunslinger". I picked-up a used Rodeo recently and really like it. I have an original Colt, and the two are so close, the finish and the grips are the only way to tell them apart. USFA has a website you can view their options for frames, finishes, etc.

The U.S.F.A. is the creme de la creme of Colt clones and the new Taurus Gaucho is really tough & well made, it however uses the transfer bar system ala Ruger Blackhawks and most purists won't approve. My Gaucho Stainless was slicker than snot right out of the box.

I have a USFA I got from Doug Turnbull. Around $1400 and very sweet. The Ruger SS Vaquero is mighty nice as well. I've had very bad luck with Taurus hand guns.

Steve,

Uberti makes a good gun, no doubt about it. Ive broken a few hands on Ubertis but even with that, I still find them more durable than the original Colts. Im sure youd be happy with he CimarronIts a handsome gun.

If you want the "best", get the USFA. You could always get a real Colt for about $1300, for a new one. Uberti makes a good gun that varies quality-wise according to era and distributor. Cimmarron was one of the better distributors.

Personally, my shooting 45 is a New Vaquero.
