You older guys remember fender skirts? They were pretty much a standard item back then. The small the just filled the wheel well. Then the Cruiser skirts, and, a Continental kit for the cool types in the late fifties.

I can't stand them or the gaudy continental kits of the same era.
Some beautiful cars get uglied up by the kits and skirts, IMO.

Like the leisure suits, times, and fashions change. I don't want any part of either now, but they were all the rage back then.

My Dad was an incredible mechanic and craftsman. Over my life, I saw him bring old cars and trucks back to life from rusting hulks, both for his family and friends and his small business after he "retired". My first cars were rebuilt junkers, hand me downs, and Oh Yes, a '68 SS Camaro sleeper that he built up for me, bought from an aircraft mechanic buddy of his. His completely restored by him fire engine red '57 Chevy Belair never went anywhere without its fender skirts. I never got that part, but that was his thing.

My uncle had a vw bug with skirts in the 70-80s. I saw a C10 Chevy about a week ago with skirts, crazy as hell. Who puts skirts on anything much less a truck! dang it looked like hammered $hit.

I remember many cars with skirts and Continental kits in the 50s and 60s. I like the looks of this one although I would prefer a hardtop to the ragtop. The 60 Chevy was long enough that I don't think the Continental kit looks out of place. I could do without the decorations on the skirts though.

A big seller in those days was trunk size as people were starting to do more and more traveling by car. I can remember Vivian Vance and William Frawley (Ethel and Fred on I Love Lucy) staring in the trunk of a car they were advertizing and saying 'wow - you could put a bowling alley in there'.

My father had a 1958 Mercury Monteray with fender skirts. It also had a push button automatic transmission. Pretty cool at the time.

Dad's '65 Pontiac had the somewhat subdued skirts. He traveled the 8 states in the upper midwest for a twine company out of Rotterdam, Holland. The first heavy snow storm of the year hit him way up in Minnesota or North Dakota early in the first fall that he had the car. He got a flat tire. The bolts holding the skirts on were solidly encased in ice. When all was said and done, the skirts came off to stay.

Like hoop skirts, and bustles on women's dresses, now, we have to wonder what were thinking, but at the time--.

I can't remember the car, but the skirts were held on by some kind of spring lever that he couldn't get to unhook. By the time he was done 'convincing' them to come off, they weren't going back on.
