Not pissing in the punch, just musing aloud.

My 700 love is deep, but $1K offers many options......................

I would surmise one of those options is the 257 Roy vice the 264 ?

Build price isn't a function of the chambering, assuming no boltface mods are required, etc.

No secret I prefer the 257Wby,but the 264Win Faction could build a very fine example for $1K,especially aboard a 700.....................

Well Fellas,
At my age life is too short to sit around building rifles instead of shooting them. It's bad enough that I spend most of my time reloading for them but what with the price of factory "yuppie ammo" and "golden whizzum" bullets, it's the only way a fella who really likes to burn ammo shooting things can afford this sport. $1K don't buy near enough ammo to keep me entertained very long but for a good rifle, it's a bargain. Perhaps now that I have given you my perspective you'll grasp the concept that the time you get to enjoy shooting is important too and that there are some of us (me included) who just plain love to shoot a gun fer any reason that might grab us at the moment.

If I hadn't sworn off the big green over a customer service deal about 6 years ago I'd already have one... I can still faintly recognize that bitter taste in the back of my throat.

I think I'll build something similar via Pac Nor and M77 instead... hopefully it feeds and fires ok, as there's no way I can afford $10k to have it slicked-up... maybe I'll get lucky?

I can have a rifle built in a week.

That end result will balance how I wish, have an LOP that suits me,in a stock style of my fancy,it'll be twisted per my whim, throated to maximize the application, foul little and bughole to boot.

Explain to me the concessions,I'm all ears?

Someone is having a very good day, should they surmise they are getting more joy outta shooting, than I...................

How many gunsmiths have every caliber barrel blank, in every twist, in every contour in stock... How many gunsmiths have every reamer with different throat dimensions in stock.. How many smiths have every McMillin in every color for any action in stock?
Damn Stick, either your smith has bottomless pockets and inventorys everything to suit your whim or you're pretty easy to please !!!

In a week ???

Hey Stick,
The answer to your query is easy. I don't build rifles. Don't know how. Don't care ta learn neither. I SHOOT RIFLES. Reload'n is as far as I go and that's only a means to the end of get'n enough ammo ta shoot. If'n ya like ta tweak things all the time, knock youself out. Me, I just want sumptim that I kin shoot and not be bothered ta see if'n it's all Mil Spec etc. I guess we is just different that way huh?

Oh Yeah,
One other thing. If'n it don't shoot up ta my expectations it gets one trip ta the Gunsmith before it becomes pig iron. I ain't got time ta fool around with sumptim that don't work neither.

I see 'Net Special handles ready to roll, barrel blanks have never been a supply/demand issue for me and it don't take a week of machine time to barrel a rifle(bellieve it or not).

Am not concerned about "every" 'Smith, nor close...................

A typical response, from someone who's only seen one side of the fence.

It's your loot, spend it how you please and use whatever justification coddles your senses.

Having seen both sides of the fence,a build is a natural conclusion for me,with the budget mentioned....................

I just chambered and threaded a barrel, it took a couple of hours. So that's no biggie..

I have a quite a few barrel blanks in my shop. And I also am on pretty good terms with three of the major barrel companies... Even so for the most part they don't have what I need sitting on the shelf... Guess I'm living in the wrong part of the country.. Not hounding you stick, really.. But I build a lot of rifles and if I have all the parts on hand I could assemble a Rem/Krieger, Hart, Shilen/Mcmillin, etc. easily in a week.. But most often I seem to have to wait a spell for parts to show up.. Glad it's so quick for you.. Back to the lathe.

FWIW & FYI

For the sake of passing along possibly useful information, Rem also has avail this year an SPS SS model in .264 w/ a 26" sporter barrel for $600, IIRC. Spec run, untacaloged, 250 pieces. Believe I saw it in a recent Gun List.

As for me, I'll take a .270.
