JT, They never made a 416 1 V.
We are hardly "angry", just trying to give the OP correct information.
Reboring came later after correcting Yonderling's error.
It is the most economical way to change his 223 to 300 B/O, I hope Yonderling agrees on that.
Were the rifle mine, I would give it a really good cleaning and shoot in before doing anything to it.
best, Larry

If your rifle is an original No.1AB, those were I think made in the early years, discontinued, and then remade fairly recently.
The No.1AB that I remember has the No.1A lightweight 22" barrel, but with the beavertail forearm of the No.1B sporter(a medium 26" sporter profile).
Think of the A taper as a Shilen #2 and the B taper as a #4 Shilen.
Some depends on if you want to keep the forend factory or if that becomes a don't care. If it is a don't care, then whatever taper you want as long as the breech end is around 1.2" because of the forend hanger proximity to the underside of the barrel.
If you want to keep the forend wood intact, then you can order from the various vendors the factory barrel profile. If you are not an optimist, you can send in your takeoff barrel and the barrel vendor will duplicate it for you.
I have found that with the No.1A Alex Henry forend, that a Shilen #2 will fit very nicely without wood removal. One only has to take the delivered blank breech area down to the No.1A diameter and it will lay in fine. The No.1AB in factory configuration is not encountered too often, so my assumption is that the AB and the A share the same barrel taper. The B forend being longer than the A, the assumption is that the barrels are alike. Sorta a No.1B forearm with a No.1A barrel cut. Ruger has made a lot of variations that are no longer in production with the No.1.
Lilja and Shilen have some factory taper drawings on their sites, take some measurements off your factory barrel and compare notes. You know how internet info is........... :-)
One way to be absolute, is to send the takeoff barrel in, but probably not really necessary with a good smith.
If you are reboring, the muzzle diameter is of interest to the reboring guy, as is the depth of the scope screw holes. Ruger quarter rib holes in front on their oem barrels can get fairly deep, so one might do some measuring before sending it off.
FWIW

He may have been using bull barrels (1-V) as his braise line?? They weren't bull barrels, but looking back, I think they were all 1B's, except the 416 which was the only one with the Alex Henry forend. It looks like I was just mistaken on the 416, and it was the 338 barrel I swapped with the 243. These were all owned by the same guy, except my Hornet, and he must have prefered the B's. I was surprised at the time that my Hornet barrel wasn't a lighter contour than the others, but I haven't had a lot of experience with them. To the OP, if you're bothering to read this thread anymore - sorry for the misinformation on my part, guess that's what happens when you assume. Oh, and hey Larry Poot - the name is Yondering, not Yonderling.

Sorry, old fat fingers and poor typing skills. You must have the same problem as my REAL name is Larry Root.
The 416 is a 1H and most likely has the same bbl OD as the 458.

I know what your real name is, consider it a poke right back atcha. Mis-spelling the same way multiple times makes it look intentional.

This is a SECRET, just between you and me, but whenever I have a Ruger question, I go the guys who really know Ruger inside and out and, if they don't know, they would know who to ask. They not only know all about Rugers, they knew WBR, Jr., and they know the guys who work at Pinetree Castings and make a lot of the Ruger firearms.
Rody's Gun Shop Guild Road Newport, NH 03773 603-863-3356
PS - Unlike Larry Root, regardless of what he is currently calling himself, the Rody brothers are great guys who can answer your Ruger questions quickly and accurately 99.99999% of the time.

Thanks 260 for the good information. I never claimed to be THE Ruger No. 1 expert, but I do own a few and can use a dial caliper.
That was the question and I answered it.
Best to you and yours, Larry Root
