I'll take yalls word for it that I misunderstand decibel algorithms or whatever.
But that doesn't change the fact that 166 decibels will injure you and isn't "quiet" by any standard. Yea, no kidding. The only way 166 becomes "quite" is with a tax stamp.
You didn't use logic or reason to get into this opinion, I cannot use logic or reason to get you out of it.

I'm just looking to push the sound away from me so that it isn't so bothersome.

the cheap harbor freight muffs that are like $4 will work shooting any AR 15 I know of. sitting 2 benches down from a guy shooting a braked 300 ultra maybe not.

I'm just looking to push the sound away from me so that it isn't so bothersome. I put the levang on mine. I have no idea about decibels, but the noise reduction is quite noticeable. It's still louder than a 22" 223. I think it was~30-$35 from midway. My wife wants one on hers now too so the noise reduction isn't just my imagination. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/52...g-linear-1-2-28-thread-ar-15-steel-matte

Just don't get your hopes up too much. The linear comp does make a difference, but it's still a 16" barrel and it's pretty obnoxious loud. At least the compensators you're talking about are a cheap lesson learned. A friend of mine learned the hard way. $1400 silencer on a 16" 223 is a complete waste of a bunch of money. I'd never been around one so he let me shoot his. He is right. Completely cured me of ever wanting a silencer on a 223.

all depends on what you shoot for ammo with a can. ANYTHING supersonic, the can helps but does not impress me....223 and otherwise.
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

Comps don't reduce noise, they increase noise to the shooter.

Comps don't reduce noise, they increase noise to the shooter. Unless you install a comp that sends all the pressure/noise forward like a plain barrel, instead of out the top/sides like a muzzle brake.

Comps don't reduce noise, they increase noise to the shooter. They're called a "linear compensator." All the holes go out the front, with a bit of room for the gas to start expanding inside the comp first.

I tried the Linear Comp on my .223 and a 7.62 x 40WT. Other than adding a 1/4 pound to my muzzle, I can't say they did anything that a 1/4 pound heavier barrel wouldn't do. KAW Valley makes a lightweight model (2.9 oz), but I have not tried it. http://www.kawvalleyprecision.com/kvp-comps.html

DakotaDeer my noise reducing compensator is a product called ProEars Gold. I actually put them on my ears before pulling the trigger on my 16 inch barreled 308 in my latest ground blind, amazing technology is going on these days.

I keep seeing these statements on this site....and have no clue where you people come from. I suppose far too much Hollywood...

Lilysdad: which part of my statement do you disagree with? If I hadn't fired 16" 223's with all three different muzzle treatments I wouldn't have commented. There's a lot I don't know about ar's so I don't comment much down here. Just thought I would comment since it's something I do have experience with. I didn't expect the silencer to bring it down to a cb cap,(james bond style) was just expecting a little less than a 300 win mag. I'm not trying to start a pissing match, just curious.

Your suppressed .223 was as loud as an unsuppressed 300WinMag? I don't know. I didn't shoot it next to a 300. Maybe I'm wrong, but I wasn't impressed they're still obnoxious loud. The suppressed ar I shot was a friends. I shot his and he shot mine with the linear brake. We agreed he got screwed. Maybe his is a pos. I don't know what brand it is. He did mention they talked into the titanium but all I know other than that is it's 8-10" long. I did get the chance to fire a suppressed 22lr this winter and was very impressed.

So, in essence, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about? Got it.
