I have never seen a board with more annonymous posters than this one. Everyone is hiding behind an handle, or almost everyone.

Why?

I posted my name "Gene Langston" or my birth certificiate name of "William Eugene Langston" and invited people to google my name. (Under Gene.) I was advised by one of the regulars here by IM I'd made a mistake. He said someone might find my remarks offensive and call my boss, Sheriff Scott Berry, 706-769-3945 to complain.

As if I would say anything to you I wouldn't say to him. I think it is the ultimate mark of cowardice to hide behind a shield of annonymity, but I see why some people do. If it got back to their peers how they felt about certain issues, they'd probably be in for trouble.

I challenge you who are brave enough to stand by your convictions to also stand by your name. Your name was given by your parents, and if you've screwed it up, that's your problem. If you are afraid of some kind of internet retribution, it's groundless. I've been posting on all kinds of boards under my real name (in the profile section) for years.

Personally, I think it is reprehensible to insult someone annonymously. The mark of the coward who throws stones at the backs of schoolchildren.

Get some testosterone, guys. You women, I understand and don't blame you as you WILL get unwelcome messages if you use your right name. But guys, you ain't women, although this site, I must say, has a high precentage of those who act like they are.

I give out my real name in PM's, at least I have so far. My initials will have to do on a public forum. Contrary to your experience I've know a few people that have run into problems using their real names.

Ditto - using your whole real name invites problems for some.

Many times it isn't about convictions or anything but simply a nickname used in familiar company. Or a nickname given to you in flight school (Pugs). Or you may be a fan of a particular brand or product. I worry less bout a dudes name than I do about anything else.

As to handles here vs elsewhere - I would say that here is less than others.

Notably AR.

I seriously doubt that if someone tosses an insult they do it because they "feel safe" behind a fake name - they do it to toss the insult and not to do a "drive by" posting.

Well, I'm not trying to harsh anyone's buzz, but what kind of troubles have you seen others get into? I certainly wouldn't want that to happen, I guess I've not seen it yet. Most of the people here are decent folks, and I don't see how anything that could really hurt them.

I agree with Gene.

100%

If you can't take the flak that comes with using your real name at the very least, along with your location and occupation, in your profile if not as your on-screen "handle" keep your opinions where they're safest (inside your gourd).

Otherwise has at least the unavoidable appearance of cowardice.

The decent folks on here aren't the one's I worry about..

..it's the indecent ones that lurk and collect personal info to be used for a myriad of illegal/harrassing/just plain wrong
activities that I'm leery of...

lol no problems here. generally dont give my name on the open forum, not because im afraid of someone getting it, but because ive had it butchered on other forums or it gets shortened to a name that gets under my skin. however if i pm someone or they pm me when i reply i include my first name and last initial. there are one or two on here who ive met in person who have used my name on the open forum, dont bug me. on another forum i frequent most use my name instead of my handle as ive done buisness with most and have chatted with them more or less on a weekly or daily basis for the last 4 years.

if it keeps your panties from getting in a twist, my name is Sheridan Shumway

Always use my real name in PM's. An internet persona does two things: 1) Gives a feeling of annonymity which causes people to say what they really think (good or bad). 2) Helps keep the identity theft down to a minimum.

I agree that we all would like to be able to use our names but taking or giving flak - has very little to do with what a guy knows as your name.

EVERY person that has pm-ed me here typicaly has used their real name. It's the guy surfing the net and not posting I worry about.

I don't see the identity as a case of "not brave enough" or "cowardice". I'm more than happy to ID myself to anyone I feel has a need to know, and have done so with some members. More than a few have done the same with me.

Nowadays, it's not hiding per se, but a matter of privacy. Just because I can put up with the flak, doesn't mean I want to or must.

PM me if you want to know my real name, phone #, or address.
BTW - it's in the phone book!

I strongly disagree..................

I don't want to use my name.
I'll use a handle if I feel like it and the rest of you don't have to like it.
My handle is BETTER than anybody else's
I only use the very BEST handle because only the BEST is good enough for me
Therefore my handle MUST be the BEST
Any fool that doesn't use a handle like me is beneath contempt
Anyone that refuses to acknowledge that my handle is the BEST is a moron.
I'll be flying out to your area soon and we can meet and FIGHT about whose handle is best.

Ooops.......my handle IS my name......... ..........sooorrrry

Well OK.....Mr.Boilerpig1 of Texas.

When you get to Tx., let me know and I would delighted to buy you an enchalada plate and a cold beer. I will shake your hand and introduce myself.

There are a few places I don't like to see my name: On warrants, at the bottom of loan papers, on credit cards or on Al Gores world-wide internet. If this makes me a coward in your eyes then I guess I will return to the safety of my cellar.

It's not so much anonymity, but the threat of identity theft, that is the real problem with real names on boards like these.

I can't remember the forum, it might even have been 24-hour Campfire, where real names and threats started flying. One of the guys in the argument was even posting aerial photographs of the other guys house.

One of guys I know personally picked up an email stalker. Since his email address was also his business address he put up with it for a long time hoping the stalker would tire out - he didn't. The stalker even gleaned the names of my pard's kids and referred to them in the messages. The stalker was smart enough to never send anything threatening, but the references were enough to be unsettling.

I tried but Dick Hertz was already taken.

I guess you can add sophomoric smart-ass to my title of coward. Methinks you take this internet forum stuff a little too personally/seriously. As ironbender stated, people will get it if/when it is needed.

Since they seem concerned I'll PM my name, address and phone number to Gene and Dr. Howell.
Same for anyone else who can give me a reason they need to know

Now that the information has been passed along, I have two comments.
Every board I have ever been around, it has been common practice to use "handles"
Second, I may be wrong, but I think Rick has the job of making the rules here. When he rules that names will be used, I'll either comply or leave the board

I'm not sayin' this to be insulting, but it seems a touch naive for anyone, let alone someone in law enforcement to be posting an opinion like that. I don't need every Joe who may wish to do me harm for some reason to know my real name, or be able to locate it on the internet.

I belong to exactly one forum that requires the use of real names, that being a custom rod building forum. I've not seen another one yet that requires it.

I did naively post under a forum some time back under my real name, and it showed up on a search engine some time later. I don't need everyone that knows me knowing my business, where I live, or my telephone number.

I also know enough about computers and the internet to understand that I know SQUAT, and probably do not have anywhere near a full realization of just how much information can be gathered on someone with just a name, especially a name as unique as mine.

With the information you provided, I can likely give you back your date of birth, home tel #, and home address, all from a free internet search. (I obviously won't do it though in case you don't want that info out there).

Me, I'll protect my familly, myself, and my hard earned good credit better than that. I've made enemies. I'm sure most of us have, especially those who have worked in law enforcement.

I typically PM with my full name, but you won't see it on a public forum.
