If I were making a bet, I'd say they are going to go back to the previous SS and that a new "all weather" Ruger M77 will be out next year. As was previously mentioned, they generally do a good job keeping only currently available models on the web site.

They (Ruger) may feel that way, but after handling and shooting a RAR last weekend; I believe there is a big difference between the two. I much prefer the all weather Hawkeye over the cheap RAR. However, there seems to be a big demand for cheap azzed plastic rifles these days.. To each their own..

Ditto on that. Had a Ruger American in .30-06 and could not get it to shoot well. In spite of the fact that it was a gift from Dad, it got sold to help fund an all Weather Hawkeye. No regrets as the Hawkeye is a far superior rifle. And it shoots well.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Yup.

The RARs seem to be good shooters, but nobody's gonna be fighting over them when Dad shuffles off this Mortal Coil.

If you can tolerate the slightly heavier barrel and the cartridge choices meet your needs, I heartily recommend the Hawkeye Predator. Great trigger. The stock, by feel anyway, isn't any heavier than the All Weather synthetic one.

I like the safety position on the RAR, but I prefer the three-position safety of the M77 Hawkeye. The stock Hawkeye trigger is suitable for hunting, but I do prefer a lighter trigger.

There is a place for both the RAR rifle and the Hawkeye, they shouldn't compete with each other. I've had several All Weather Rugers, both MK-II's and the Hawkeye. No longer, I simply like the SS Winchester a little better, but would not feel handicapped with the Ruger and hope they come back.

But cost and aesthetics aside, the RAR's shoot better than any 77 I've ever owned. I don't know that I'd trust one on a hunt in harsh conditions. At least not yet. After a little more time to prove themselves maybe.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

It really doesn't matter what Ruger may feel...it is what the customer is buying.

If I buy a Ruger it will be the base model...the Hawkeye. However, I'm a committed hunter and shooter. It is easy to drop a grand in a Hawkeye/Leu combo. To some, that is an investment.

When one adds the cost of a hunting lease, rife/scope, gas, ammo, ect...our sport is pricing itself out of business.

Look at the cost of a Rem 700 BDL/CDL, gun stores in my area will not carry or carry a very limited number of them...people just are not willing to pay $800+ dollars for one.

Hence the rise of the inexpensive rifle...which will only be inexpensive for a few years. Anyone remember when you could by the roughly finished ADL (now called SPS) for under $300?

It's also why I buy mostly used guns. I've got time to wait, and I wait till I find what I want and a reasonable price.
