After I brought home my new custom takendown in late May I was sitting on a bench after my first range session. Tip at my feet and on the grass, I noticed a slug had inched up the tip almost to the string groove. Well, she now had a name: "Slugger".

Working from home for most of the last 3-months so I've been taking advantage of my lunch time to shoot pretty much every day and peppering y'all with rookie questions every night.

A creature of habbit, today I stepped out back to shoot Slugger. I was a dozen arrows into my lunch hour, knocked one mroe (I thought), and came to full draw, released, and felt Slugger explode in my hand and land at my feet with the arrow. Somehow I managed to either not knock it or pushed the nock off the string. I don't know.

You really cannot dry fire a bow and get away with it. It does tend to damage things. Slugger's riser is cracked almost all the way through but the limbs are OK. The fine folks over at Bob Lee are already making a new riser so I have to figure out a new name: "Slugger 2", "Slugger II", "S2", or may "Slugger Part Deux". I think my favorite is "Slugger: Bow Of Dumbass".

Fortuantely a new riser is "only" $500, Bob's bunch is only charging me $400, I have $400, my wife is a saint, and I have a few more weeks to decide which broadheds to try out.

All in all not a horrible day. Just not such a good one. <=== I cannot believe I just wrote that.
Dang - that kind of sucks! I guess that's a bonus for a takedown in being able to salvage the limbs. I'm headed out to shoot right now and will be thinking of exploding bows 🤔
Glad you didn't get hurt.

I had a 50# Bear Montana longbow blow up on me at full draw the second day I had it. It definitely gets your attention.

Roger that! It came close to breaking smooth in half. That crack is almost all the way through.
Sorry to hear about that. Glad Lee is able to suppy a replacement.
Crap! I did that with my cheapo Samick, but it survived. It's an eye-opener though. Also whacked a tree trunk with my cossbow limb by getting too close.
