Beauty Dan, I always enjoy this thread !
Yep,also enjoy the chess match.
Good luck to everyone this season.
Still way early but there are some decent buck to hunt
Cool thread, looks like you've got the makings of a good season there.
I look forward to this thread every year, thanks for bringing us along with you Dan.
dang, that's a nice group of bucks. Is that baclor's group still together now?
dang, that's a nice group of bucks. Is that baclor's group still together now?
No they have split up and are off of that bean field now as they are turning yellow and brown
Show us how it's done Dan, good luck.
Good luck, glad to see this thread again.
Shoot em’ up!
Bow opens here next Friday, been getting ready. Happy Hunting!
Still getting ready setting stands and monitoring movement...still too warm and early to get rolling but soon it's about 2 weeks away unless I catch a cold weather front before that
Retrieved a SD card from a carded camera today from another property there is potential
Haven't even thought about getting into the woods yet. Gotta be cooler.
-Ken
I have been taking long hikes in the local experimental forest to stretch my legs. Not even thought of carrying my bow yet as it is still way too warm and muggy for me. When I have to wear some deet to get by and ring out my t-shirt it is still way too warm in cheeseheadville! Good luck to all you arrow slingers!
Same here looking for cooler weather. And the ticks are still out, found one crawling on my leg the other afternoon. I hate ticks.
Split and Nub right passed my stand this morning during legal shooting hours

This one was the size of a flea which is what I thought it was at first I've never seen a tick in northern Michigan in October before.
Treating one’s clothing and boots, along with your pack with permethrin spray will keep the little bastards off; it actually kills them if they get on you. I’ve not had a single one on me since I began using it a few years ago. They remain active here pretty much year-round. If you sit on the ground or handle a deer with them on it, they will find you.
Have always bought the Sawyers brand, but recently went with a gallon jug of multi-use (including clothing) that was a lot cheaper. A treatment lasts about six weeks or six launderings.
A tick bite can really mess up your life. The Lone Star tick is expanding its territory and one consequence of a bite can be an intolerance for red meat. My vet had that, and though it usually gets better, it ain’t what a feller with a freezer full of venison needs.
FWIW, the doe I killed a couple of weeks ago was tick-free, unusual here.
Good luck this season. This is a fun thread to follow every year. Especially nice to see your trail cam pix versus what I get on mine.
He's a playa' in my book.
Wish we had bucks like that around here! There's a few.
Tall tines & some "junk", what's not to like !
First sit of the season yesterday afternoon...I didn't hunt the new stand I set up near the big deer I'll now just call Hoss
Had some good activity on my trail cameras near spot I chose to sit on this other property
Saw 2 doe on neighboring property and nothing else came through but at around 6 pm camera went off and there is Hoss he came in front of camera and walked right towards my stand, the direction he approached from would have be good with the wind I had yesterday....and so the cat and mouse begins! I skipped going out this morning as I want to hunt Hoss in the new stand in the afternoon
Truth be told after I saw him come through again yesterday I asked myself why am I even hunting here I need to give Hoss the old college try
Pictures from a carded camera next to stand I sat yesterday afternoon
Hoss coming through yesterday afternoon and heading to my stand while I was else where
Well was an exciting afternoon hunt I had Hoss 40 yds from me but no shot
Saw 6 different buck and 2 doe
Hoss came out following 3 smaller buck but they came out behind my camera and just out of reach ,actually I could have killed the 1st two buck but the 3rd one and Hoss had brush obstructing them
Wind should be right tomorrow afternoon again so I will hunt that stand again
Great fun all in all!
He is a Hoss, been slow hunting here mostly just does and fawns being seen.
Great pics. Thanks for the effort.
Afternoon sit yesterday was uneventful just saw 1 doe
Thanks for posting your hunt.
Did not hunt yesterday and likely not today temps have warmed and wind isn't right. It's not quite time to put the full press on but very soon
I sat yesterday evening, saw 5 does, and 2 different spike all between 5:00 to 6:10, nothing after that moon was shinning.
Decided on a 2 1/2 yr old doe for freezer Tuesday.
No eligible bucks so far, Will wait for Halloween time period.
-Ken
Saw 2 doe and a small 7 pt this morning....good wind for this afternoon I'll be hunting Hoss
I hunted a small oak ridge this evening, doe and button head feeding on acorns, large buck took after her no shot. She comes back he followed but it got to dark at that point to shoot. Next time
Wind was wrong as I was going in I backed out
Then 15 minutes later I get these
Yeah but if the Wind was wrong, you did the right thing!
He's to old to fool , in the wrong Wind!
Wind was wrong as I was going in I backed out
Then 15 minutes later I get these
Appears we share similar luck.
But you most likely did the right thing.
Hunting the wind is probably one of the most important aspects of our sport.
-Ken
This morning Right in front of my camera I could of whacked him at 15 yds not a shooter he was pushing 2 doe
Wind is supposed to be right this afternoon to hunt Hoss lets hope weatherman isn't wrong again today
I’m in stand and wind is right
Fingers crossed!
Get 'em Dan!
I watching from the sidelines currently, I was positive for Covid 19 yesterday. Hopefully I'll be cleared for next weekend. In the meantime I'm (along with others here!) looking over your shoulder and rooting for you.
Chootem, I'm back on the oak ridge. Just before I drove over rained for 30 mins, sun's out know. A great evening to be in the woods .Happy Hunting
I got out for a bit this am,got busted climbing into my stand, and had 2 doe circling me for about an hour trying to figure it out.
Also a small 7pt.
Good luck eveyone.
He never showed yesterday saw 3 doe and a small buck
Not hunting this morning and wrong wind this afternoon so may be a day of rest
Beauty of a morning
2 fawns came in alone around 730
Mama must be gettin busy
That's decent buck ,good luck on him
Wind has shifted to correct so I'll be in stand in an hour or so!
good luck. pre rut should start soon
Saw nothing in stand yesterday very slow and wind was very light quiet in the woods
Sat a new stand yesterday afternoon in the rain saw nothing
Heavy rain all day today
No Rain Wed. things should start popping anytime now
I'll be starting tomorrow. Front coming through. 90° today.
Saw 2 doe this morning and 4 buck this afternoon a 3pt and 3 spikes that were all traveling together
Hoss has been a no show for a while now
Those are WAY better pics than I get on my cameras. hahaha
Getting a little here in MS now. Taking off tomorrow and Monday so I should be able to get at least 2 days of hunting in.
Need to put up new SpyPoint cameras and a few more camp chores to get things ready for the seasons.
Keep the pics coming!
No movement this morning back at it this afternoon
Things have been slow seeing spikes and little buck if any at all
Raining again this morning so sitting it out Hope to be back out this afternoon
Well it happened at about 5:45 pm
I got an arrow through Hoss
I found blood and then the arrow about 40 yds from hit sight
I had a slight quartering towards shot
I waited 20 minutes went to hit sight found some blood but no arrow followed trail and found arrow I tracked for less than 100 yds and left as it was getting dark and there is a lot of standing water
I have a tracking dog meeting me at 7:30 am due to all the water and rain
I suspect 1 lung and liver
Fingers crossed here is the arrow looks very promising to me
George -
Next time wear a grunt call around you neck and once you stick them blow it hard and they will stop and look for the buck that just poked them.
If they start walking grunt again slower but loud enought for them to hear you.
I’ve watched many, many deer’s heads wobble, they lay down and die right in sight of my stand…. Freaking cool, and you don’t have to worry about tracking them.
Works like a charm.
Looks like Hoss is a goner to me. That arrow is saturated with blood. Show us the pictures tomorrow please. Good Luck..
looks like you will find him in the am.... waiting for pics...
You got him Dan.....
He's dead. Just get him found....
Good deal Dan. Hope you find him before the coyotes do.
Good Luck!
Sigh looks good, from the Arrow!
Can't wait to see pics, as I'm hoping your on him by now!
that's a story you'll never forget! congrat's Dan!
Amazing story.Congrats on the recovery.
Wow! What a great buck and great story with a hell of an ending........
Congratulations Dan.
This may be the shortest live from my stand thread. Congratulations hell of a story
Congratulations on a fine deer. Thought by the amount and color of blood you would have found him sooner. How far total did he travel? Might have to rename him Hobo Buck even though he is a Hoss.
Congrads Dan , Very nice Buck, hope you have another tag. To keep hunting! Bucks starting to run does here.
Well done,,
You owe that pooch a steak sammy..
Congrats look forward to your story every year
That’s pretty wild. Funny, crazy, wild…I don’t know what to call it. Congrats, it’s a heckova buck.
All is well that ends well.
Congrats Dan!
Congratulations Dan- do you owe the rail workers union some dues?…grins
Good stuff, Dan !
Congratulations on sticking Hoss and havingThor’s keen tracking abilities.
🦫

Nice job! Way to stick with it.
Got him skinned and quartered and to the taxidermist. He will fix the tines and ear damaged by the train
I have doe tags in hand and Nov 20 I can buck hunt again with the gun
I'll keep posting pictures and updated as I hunt
Fantastic & congratulations Dan !!
That's 1 you'll remember.
Congrats on a great deer and even better story. Keep on doing what you do best. Thanks.
Heckuva buck DVD. Congrats!!
Congrats on that boy. Good job.
-Ken
Well I have a pocket full of doe tags so I think I will go out tomorrow morning for the cross bow opener and try to make some meat
Getting a lot of pictures of smaller buck the last 2 days but Split finally reappeared after a long absence !
Hoss is gone so he don’t have anyone to whip him now. Looking forward to pictures with your next tag on him.
Quick and easy nice big doe 20 minutes after I got in stand
Saw 4 buck and a couple other doe, watched 6pt and 3pt sparing
That'll eat well. Congrats

Things have slowed here breeding is going on but Nub just now made an appearance
A FNG! When is the gun season?
A FNG! When is the gun season?
Week from tomorrow
all my best bucks were not seen prior to their demise on either camera or in the flesh. You never know what's going to show up once the rut really kicks in. Here's hoping he sticks around for you Dan.
I hope it comes together for ya, Dan!
Going to be a long week brother.
Just catching up on this thread. More fortunate than the dead buck narrowly clearing the train, he escaped Bubba. A buck within easy sight of the highway wouldn't make it through sunrise down south
Well it was my typical opener
Had good deer movement early 2 small buck,2 doe and 2 fawns and then at 8:30 am the neighbor blew up the pines not more than 100 yds from me
I sat put till 10:30 am and then decided to go to the lease Nub had already passed by my stand earlier
while getting to my lease my camera goes of back where I just left I get a picture of this buck 20 yds from the stand I just left
I had some coffee with my cousin he had Nub cross the road and pass by him but as he did with his bow he gave him a pass
I eventually decided to go back to the property I started at as that buck that showed up wasn't either of the 2 or 3 target buck
45 minutes after arriving and getting in my stand I get another picture of Nub going by my stand again
Eventually poor Nub wandered of my lease and to the property behind it and he didn't get the same courtesy that he'd been extended earlier
I saw no deer the remainder of the day
Yesterday I hunted till 11am saw 2 small buck and that's it
Deer are locked down pretty good I'll monitor and hunt accordingly
All day sits this time of the year.
Have said it recently in thread on here, 5 of my last 6 bucks have came between 10:30 & 2:30.
Connected on the guy who paid a visit on the opener
It’s been a great season!

Not yet I will once I cut it up but I agree old war horse me thinks
Just got some bad news yesterday, the property I just killed that buck on has been sold and is closing on Dec 2nd
Appears that was my last hunt ever on the property I've been hunting that property since 2009. I would have purchased it but it was way over priced for what the actual value or resale would have been(it's been for sale for 4 years)
So that's 2 properties I've lost this past season, I'm down to my lease and the property near my lease I killed Hoss on. We shall see what else I can find during this coming year
I'm disappointed but figured it was going to happen sooner or later. I feel blessed I had 11 and 12 great years of hunting on those properties
Sorry to hear that. I’ve been there myself. I learned to bow hunt on a neighbors property. I was a pretty slow learner and about the time I started to connect some of the dots, a family member purchased the land, fenced every inch of timber and ran several hundred goats through it and destroyed it for whitetail hunting. I’m in a better situation now. I just have to look back and be grateful for the time I had there.
Great buck Dan! Congrads, shame about the land to hunt, being Sold, rifles been a Bust for most around here this year!
Well done on that buck. I have enjoyed following your entire season.
