I pulled my old, 1990 Pearson Spoiler Plus from the basement a few weeks ago and had it completely refurbished with a new string, rest and sights and MAN, am I loving this old bow again!
My main bow now is a 2006 Hoyt Trykon XL and it's a beast, but that old Spoiler Plus is still NICE!
The limbs and everything are still great and it has a 38" axle length and an 8" brace height. I always shot it well, but fell into the speed craze and got the 314 fps (AMO) Trykon.
I think my Spoiler was 240 AMO -very fast in 1990- and it doesn't seem too slow even today, but I turn the lbs up to 65 lbs (it's got 72 lbs in it) and my Trykon maxes out at 58 lbs.

Anyway,
Very FUN to fix the old friend up again. I'm planning to keep it as a backup hunting bow and I want to test it out had-to-head-vs my Trykon at my 3D field range. It sure draws over smoother with the old "energy wheels".
It's old technology, but its fun re-learning the fine details again. That bow was -HOT- in it's day.
Hard to believe that bow is 19 already? OMG.

Funny what qualifies as smooth this day and age.......I saw where a guy said a PSE X-Force was a smooth drawing bow. The old bows are neat, but the things that I like in the newer ones are higher letoff and a wall to pull against. Those old bows killed the deer just as dead as the new ones though.

I've got longbows that shoot almost that fast!

The things I like best about the old compounds is the long axle to axle and big brace height. Very forgiving and easy to be accurate with over the new, short speed demons. Smoother draw is a plus, also.

I think with the LBS turned up to 72 and using 75 grain tips, I used to chrono 258 fps with 28", 2114 arrows.
I still use those tips, now on 28" carbon arrows.
This bow would shoot ANY broadhead well!! I could blast right through deer when I hit them.

I can see where the new bows shine. You don't have to pull so many LBS to get them to perform.

-UPDATE-
I re-sighted in both bows today. I moved my TruGlow Range Rover over to the old Spoiler and put a new, HHA Optimzer on the Hoyt Trykon. Over a foot of snow still on the ground.
--Long story short:
My 2006 Trykon absolutely KILLED my old bow at the range. Much smoother to shoot and way, waayy more accurate out past 30 yards.
I sighted in the Trykon out to 60 yards and shot some decent groups. Sighted in the Spoiler to 50 yards.
The Spoiler was all over the place and much harder to hold a group. I will probably put this thing back in storage.
There is just no comparison on accuracy. The Trykon is much smoother and more forgiving.
I've killed some deer with the old bow, but no farther than 27 yards. I'm retiring the bow. Accuracy is paramount for hunting and the Trykon just plain shoots tighter groups.
