Rattled in the biggest deer I've ever seen live 12 pt with matching split browe tines deer is pushing Boone and Crocket saw him crossing opened hard woods 120 yds from me hit the horns and he came on the run could barely hang the horns had him at 30 yds but he was getting close to being in my wind it was now or never and he caught me draw. He was skittish because its still windy here he just stepped back a couple yards and turned he wasn't spooked as he still hung around looking for the buck fight
It was a deer of a life time I thought I had him but the big guys have that extra sense!
At least he didn't spook and wind me so I still have hopes of connecting with him
I'm just sick to my stomache uugghh!

BTW still in my stand just had a 6 pt @ 15 yds
That's 4 buck since 4:00 and 2 were shooters

Afternoon hunt yesterday I saw 2 8pts and a 7 pt buck( no shooters) and one single fawn,tells me mama is getting ready to get down to bussines.Also had turkey 30 yds from me a saw a red fox......I Will be back at it this morning

When I lived in NW PA (south of Jamestown, NY) I stand hunted once or twice. Too slow for me, especially when deer weren't moving.

Then saw a fresh roadkill that was not there earlier, and a couple deer on the freeway. Have not seen the rutting activity yet, and does still paired up. But it's gonna start any day now.

I got SOAKED last night. My basement smells like a wet dog this morning from all the wet wool.......

The deer were already in the neighbor's yard when I went in, 6 doe & a spiker eating apples and bird seed!

When I came out, the bastids were in the yard of the property owners where I was hunting. As I walked out, I glassed a dandy (in my eyes!) buck and 5 more dilly die does monkeying around on the mowed lawn.

I had my decoy out this morning, had a little dink come in a little on edge but had numerous shots as he circled.

Had a fawn come hauling a$$ down one hill and than came into the decoy, probably thought it was her mom. She was huffing pretty hard, little dink proceeded to pursue her.

Never did see what got her running? Saw one other fair buck that I've seen before come running down a hill and than saw a doe, he got a sniff and than ignored her and bedded down.


Pulled a camera I've got in a poor stand spot, but wanted to see if anythings been around (funnel area). In two weeks a few pics of does, but one pretty nice buck I haven't seen before. Of course that wasn't a 1/2 hour before I pulled the camera this morning.


Early early pre-rut here I guess, can't get out tonight. Tomorrow????

I'm livid!!! It's been eating at me this jerk killed this dink and I saw we're the shot was and he tried telling me he was way up on top where he has permission
I came back here to make sure he took it and to investigate
I back tracked to the hit site and the [bleep] has a stand on the property I have sole permission on
I have his phone # from last year but gonna cool my jets before I call cause it will be profanity littered and bad !

The area where I hunt, which is private property owned by a hand full of people but normally pretty quiet during archery season has been a cluster [bleep] all season, especially the last two weeks.

Took a doe Sunday that was being chased by a small buck along with 6 more does. Saturday seen a doe being chased about 150 yards out but didn't see the buck so I used the grunt call. That was the wrong answer. When i looked to my left ( the other diredtion of the doe) the monster was 35 yrds looking at my tree trying to figure out why the tree was grunting. Had to let him go in fear of being spotted. Taking the next 4 days off work to try again.

Spike and 2 doe tonight thats it...

hopefully someone else didn't cap him on you...

I took out another doe just now and gave it to a neighbor who wanted it. He is no longer able to hunt......

Uugghh again! Almost evened out the bad breaks but not quite
Finished up an estimate at 2:30 and was 20 minutes from one of the properties I hunt and decided to just go retrieve my camera cards as I have dinner plans tonight.
I pull into the land owners drive way and 50 yd's in front of me is a doe in a hedge row. I get out and grab my bow thinking if I can creep close enough for a shot I'm gonna get me some meat right by my Jeep!
Of course that plan failed as I was just getting close enough she bolted as well as another deer.
I walked to the back of the yards and crossed the 1st bridge over the creek and came to the 2nd bridge(oxbow in the creek) and stopped and waited sure enough I here rustling and out pops a 4 pt posing broadside at 20 yds.He goes into the pines and here comes a spike again poses at 20 yd's. Now the 4 pt comes out grunting and running a doe. I stay put for a minute and start to creep forward as I get 10 yd's from the pines I hear more grunting and here comes a Big stud of an 8 pt only 20 yd's from me but he's in the pines and no shot he's working parallel with me so I sneak down the trail trying to cut him of...didn't make it as he got on the doe ahead of me and ran her back thru the pines...Almost again but no cigar would have been cool to whack a big guy in blue jeans and work coat!

Possible to re-locate your stand(s) at all? Some of the big guys might be wise to your location and avoiding them?

Throughout the season I'm constantly moving one stand or another, some not very far but just far enough and other times I'm totally tree hoping.

I always keep one stand available/free to move as needed.


Two years ago I saw the buck I was after the first night I was on stand as I was walking out, next evening I went in about an hour earlier than normal. Placed a stand that evening in about 10-15 minutes and an hour later had my buck.

Oh I've been adjusting the big guys diont have a rhyme or reason now doe are what dictates things now.... Hunt the doe bedrooms and hope he is seeking

That wasn't working on the one I just took, I knew where the does were and where the other bucks were. My guy was staying clear of all them and the other hunters in the area.

I'm in my stand and puzzled 10 minutes after I got here I here a crack and then horns hitting to getter like a serious brawl then I here snort weezing and a grunt
I say it's got to be someone hunting but the weezing seemed to move and now it's been quiet for 30 minutes

Well no one else was in there that I can tell so the big guy was in a full out brawl 150 yds from me but never saw him
Saw one doe after that and that was it

Just got in, didnt see squat but woodpeckers and squirrels.

Nothing this am investigated where I heard fight yesterday
Definitely was buck fight it was in a scrub field and no one has been in there it's tore up with scrapes and rubs

Super Busy with work past 2 days my buddy is flying in from Manitoba whitetail hunt tomorrow he shot a big 9 pt so had to check zero on my spare slugging and get him a stand ready I had one hung in a good spot from years ago but poison ivy grew all up the tree I just spent the last 15 minutes with rubber gloves and pruners getting it cleared so he can sit it Saturday for gun opener
I'm gonna get a big does of poison ivy as I'm sure it got all over me but hey what are buddies for!
Crawled up into my stand for last hour and a few problem my last chance with the bow very still no wind but I shall hope for a last chance

Preparation-H wipes will be your friend! I found out the hard way when I moved down here to Texas (they don't have poison ivy or oak in Alaska!) that I am severely allergic to the stuff. The nurse at the Doc's office told me to use Preparation-H wipes to cut down on the swelling and itching. It DID!

Well friend it looks like I'm not getting out this a.m. so the fat lady has sung over my archery season...
We all deem success differently, my season has been a great success with the whole gamut of emotions from excitement to aggravation, from surprise to disappointment
But to me although I didn't take a buck this season(1st time in a few years)
This has been one of my best archery seasons ever!I saw 2 true monster buck and them close enough to spit on 4 different times.
I saw hundreds of deer buck and doe and passed far too many to count.
I had my opportunity at a giant 8 pt past Saturday and made a bad shot 2" to far forward hitting twigs but that was my call thinking I could slip an arrow thru an obstruction.
Some would say terrible and disappointing season, not me
Great season as I hunted my butt off and had FUN the whole time even the frustrating ones! A lot of hunters forget why we pursue this sport, it's not for fame and fortune,or to kill every outing,rather plane and simple it's to have fun,enjoy ourselves and nature...and that my friends I did in spades this 2012 archery season!!

Besides this isn't over yet I'll continue my quest for one of the big guys Saturday when I'll have my 12 ga slug gun in hand

Multiple close encounters with big bucks in a wild free roaming area (not high fenced) equal a GREAT season in my opinion.

Crap day passed a 100" 8pt at 10:00am saw a button buck and a doe after someone shot so close my ears rang
Then at 1:30 2 aholes in orange tresspessed on to scrub field I was over looking,had to yell and kick them out had enough after that as it was like Beruit around me. Headed home just like I said needed to get it done with the bow as it would be a cluster [bleep] come gun
Regroup tomorrow and I'll hunt my other spot that I have the pictures of the buck posted above

Nothing worth crap to shoot yesterday does,fawns and a 3pt. After my dark till dark sit,I Got home with camera sd cards and the big buck from above passed right by my stand at 12:38 pm while I was at other spot. He looks to have been kicked up or bumped, he was moving thru briskly 30 yards straight infront of my stand

Warm here but front coming in later and maybe some snow tomorrow

If I got paid by the hour for time hunting I could retire already!

Good luck! Had 4 does cruise by late morning but were behind me so no shot. That was it, spent the rest of the day watching squirrels... Bucks are locked down with does.

Just rolled into Washington county Pa south of Pittsburg. Woke up at 1:30 am couldn't sleep so hit the road . I'm parked up above where I'm gonna hunt waiting for light so I can glass ands see what's up

So far 6 doe 3 buck ... 3 pt 5 pt and a borderline legal deer was a 7 pt with a broke off tine on one side and a point on the other that was about an inch but I eared on the side of cation and passed him

Getting a quick change of lighter clothes and get back into the woods in anther spot I scouted yestetday

Thanksgiving weekend here is either sex, so I figured I would at least get a doe.

Some folks from Dallas who own an adjoining 70 acres decided to come out for the weekend and target shoot all weekend.

Finally, yesterday afternoon, I hit the woods again with 20mph swirling winds.

I walked into the woods and stopped about twenty yards from a treestand, just getting the feel of the woods, when a small buck stepped out not 30' from me. He wasn't legal (we have antler restrictions) so I just watched him.

He was maybe 30" at he shoulder, 90-100lb on the hoof and the craziest 7pt (4x3) I have ever seen. His rack was no more than 10" wide and 12-14" tall with tall, skinny points coming off of skinny beams. The points were gathered and twisted together like a bunch of twigs tossed together.

He stopped and stared at me for several minutes, trying to figure out what the strange new piece of furniture was in his living room, then slowly turned around and walked back into the woods the same way he came. No sign or sounds of alarm, just walked away.

That was the only deer I saw all weekend.

Maybe I'll go up to KS after Christmas and try for one or two does to fill the freezer. My lovely bride has been hankering for some fresh venison, so I am REQUIRED to go hunting!

Went to retrieve my camera cards and as I'm getting 1st one 3 doe trot out of pines 40 yds from me
I wait a bit and get to 2 nd camera and deer running every where no horn 5 more doe. 2 minutes later I hear noise coming thru woods it's a guy with a shotgun and he's pushing thru the bedding areas I wait until he's 50 yds away and go ballistic
He says oh sorry didn't know, yeah bull crap
I tell him his trespassing and I walk around him to get his tag number and yep he ain't wearing one! I tell him to get the [bleep] out and I'm calling sheriff and game warden . I was in full WWF mode spit and f bombs flying
I hate gun season cause it brings the slobs out in full force
I m at big buck property now sitting edge of cut corn field cold and starting to snow
I've seen deer here last 2 evenings doe and 100" 8 pt hope the big guy shows tonight
My blood pressure is jut settling back to normal

After Saturday when the azzwipes in a van fired shots onto my property at a buck I was watching I set up again tonight. Half hour left in the day and a good buck, maybe 160, comes across the road and into my field. He is chasing one doe and where she goes, he goes. I got chance I figure. Their sixty yards away and shes turning every which way and finally turns the wrong way for me. Heads back across the road and so does the big guy. Four does and two small bucks come by. My neighbors cat finds me sitting there and sits on my lap for awhile. We walk back to the ATV in the dark. Hope the good buck comes to visit again.

I got permission on a new piece of property that I killed my turkey on this past May so might give that a try for a change of scenery...Owners son who is a cadet at West Point shot this one on the property,short tines but was super wide 26"

Still hunted one if my spots late morning could have killed a handful if doe but saw no horn
At new farm property over looking cut corn field with some oats and alfalfa to other side of me it's cold windy with flurries
At least I'm looking at new terrain...

Was suppossedly a young kid on adjacent property

Buddy is here from Pa hunting with me he jumped the big 8pt I hit with the bow still alive and kicking just a limp he couldn't get a clean shot at him
I had my buddy push thru a small patch after we sat and he kicked out 2 buck neither big but one will be nice next year he was a 90-100" 8 pt I purposely shot the smaller one a 6 pt,still have a buck tag left with only 2 days left in the season

Don't take this the wrong way. I'm not disrespecting the shot or anything, just stating something.

Ok, disclaimer aside. What do you figure the chances are of gangrene on the big buck? I hope he pills through, as it should be a monster next year if he makes it!

I think he is gonna live and you may not be disrespecting the shot but I am I hit him square in the heavy shoulder bone maybe 2" of penetration that was over a month ago and he looked fine except for a giddy up in his step
Killed a big one a few years back last day of muzzleloader season and when butchering him I found a braodhead in his front shoulder all calciumed over at least a year old he was just fine till he met me that day

That's good to hear, I hope you find him next year with an additional 20-30"!

I hunted this morning. Thank goodness for the tree umbrella! had 4 come in where the weren't supposed to, ending any possible chance for a shot. Winded and GONE!

Glad to share my time in the woods with you guys...think I'll do it again next season. Total talley was 5 deer,1 with bow 2 with shotgun/rifle and 2 with muzzelloader
Deer won this season as I missed 5 or 6 with long bow, shoulder hit and lost big buck with bow and missed a big buck with rifle in Pa...
Lesson learned this season shooting thru brush with bow or rifle isn't a good proposition!
